Default Edmonton Oilers presser and primer

Comments

On Sunday it was announced that Scott Palmer, aka icarus, was named GM of the CPHL Edmonton Oilers. It had been more than two years since Palmer was last at the helm of a CPHL squad. He had the following comments from his office in Sydney:

“Firstly, I want to express my sympathies to Kipper3256 for being dismissed. Having gone through it myself, I know it stings. Thank you for your hard work and I will do my best to ensure the Oilers have continued success. Maybe one day you too will be back in the CPHL.

“Secondly, it is great to be back. I have spoken to the players and we all agree that none of us actually wants to be in Edmonton but since we are all in the same boat we feel our team has more unity than most other teams in the league. The one good thing about playing in Edmonton is that we can all really focus on hockey, as there aren’t any other distractions.

“Third, it is great to have Patrice Bergeron on my team again, a player whom I drafted from obscurity. And there are so many other great leaders on this team, like Jarome Iginla, Daniel Alfredsson, Martin Brodeur, Vincent Lecavalier, and Robyn Regehr—it is very exciting to take over this team and we all feel we have a shot at the Cup this year.

“There are some tweaks to be made, namely on left wing and defence. We will address these concerns in the coming days and weeks.

“I thank KG and Jiri for inviting me back into the league and look forward to dealing with the 31 other GMs in the league, whether they are the old familiar faces or more recent additions. It’s a great day for hockey!”

Philosophy

For those who are unfamiliar with GM Scott Palmer, here is a bit of a primer on what to expect.

He values youth and building from within the organisation to ensure long-term success, but also places a premium on leadership and utility to win today. Rarely will he make a shortsighted move, it always must make sense for the present and the future. Thus do not expect to offer him Greg Johnson and receive a top prospect and top-ten draft pick in return. However, and some may have forgotten this, he is not afraid to make trades in order to get his team to look the way he wants it to look. As it takes a form he likes, it may be more difficult to pry away his players. But at present there is work to be done and you can expect him to make some moves.

He also likes to talk about himself in the third person, perhaps to make himself feel more important.

Hey guys, I will be on MSN later for trade talks... just at work right now and have a few things to get through. Since I am in Australia much of my MSN time will be in the evening/middle of the night Calgary time. However, you can also e-mail me and I will respond promptly. If you are trying to poach my best players you better have a damn sweet offer.
