i'll throw myself into this boat as well. clubs i hate, and bars the only women i ever see are either in a group of 3 or more (which makes it very intimidating to approach them) or they're with their boyfriends. i'm half tempted to try a site like Lavalife, but online dating sites have always struck me as a bit weird. i'm a big enough computer geek as it is without having to rely on my PC for relationship needs

Well there is the answer for cripes sake! CG and FF have met before as I recall, right? Go out for a friendly drink and go from there. Good conversation and some laughs is a good starting point.

If that is out of the question FF then make sure you have a wingwoman at the bar with you(a slightly less attractive friend would be ideal). Guys rarely travel alone to bars and it is a good idea to have someone with you who can keep his buddy occupied.

Ya know what, screw it. Worth a shot.
Exactly, unless you are just talking about getting some action(which I dont think you are)...although I met my current girlfriend of over a year at the bar, which we still laugh about to this day, so you could get lucky(though the overall theme of the bar scene dictates you probably wont).

I think we've had a thread on this before and I don't want to jack the thread, but...

One of my best/longest friends (female) just got married this summer to a guy she met on one of those sites. I think the key there is to be honest. No downplaying things like drinking, smoking and body mass. No playing up personality type and employment.

that really should apply to everything in life. not just on-line.

I agree that the bar probably isnt the best place to be meeting potential relationships, especially if you're dressed conservatively. It's usually so noisy there that it's impossible to have a decent conversation with anyone, let alone get to know them for more than what they look like.

Joining the co-ed rec-leagues is a good one, especially if it's a large team where you have lots of sub ins. Lots of time on the side lines to chat things up, and there's usually beers afterwards.

I'd disagree with the stigma of online dating, I know of 3 very physically attractive women with great careers/personalities, who have met good guys there; 2 of which are now married to them. You're not alone in having trouble meeting people, especially in this day. Alot of people just don't have the time or places anymore to meet potential mates, despite being quite attractive. The online dating thing can be an efficient way to overcome these barriers.

Thanks for the input everyone...

Believe it or not, I have gone out with a few men from CP, and remain friends with them (I think?) to this day. There just wasn't a 'spark' with any of them. I'm always up to more of that if anyone else wants to shoot me a PM and ask.

Secondly, I have tried online dating. I've tried about 5 different sites. My last long-term boyfriend and I met online, and we remain good friends. I went to his wedding earlier this year.

Ah, the wingman. This is another of my issues. I swear to God I'm the only single one of my friends which poses an issue in finding someone willing to be my wingman for a night. In addition, I don't have ugly friends. Would I say they're hotter than I? Well I don't know. I'd say we're all about the same, but then I'd also say we're all fairly average. In a bar full of women, we probably don't stand out.

But I think you all misinterpret what I mean by bar. I don't want to go somewhere that's going to be packed full of people, I am looking for quality and not quantity. For example, last night I went to the Hose and Hound. Not a lot of people (perhaps even too few?) the kind of bar I enjoy being that it's got pool tables, etc, problem was the lack of 'quality'. I'm gonna have to go bar hopping I guess.

Also, I find it funny how all of you who are saying don't go to a bar to find a man, all have a story about yourself or someone you know finding someone at a bar. Obviously it's not a bad spot to meet people, or you wouldn't have met anyone either. It's just something I'm trying. I'm not putting all my hopes on the bar scene.

For you men looking for women, go to a book store or grocery store. I would love it if a guy tried to pick me up in a book store.

I actually met the lady friend at a book store. Book stores are great places to meet people, even when one isn't trying to pick someone up.

That's pretty funny. I think the online thing is a crap shoot. Seems like a lot of lying going on.

Define "normal woman"

Women are everywhere. At your workplace, at the grocery store, or at the book store. They will most likely be at the shoe store, but I wouldn't recommend getting in their way...most women can be pretty vicious when it comes to shopping for shoes.

I agree with this. I've met a few ladies at book stores, especially the small independent stores. Coffee shops are really great places to meet people as well. I would rather meet a girl in a non-alcoholic state or environment. A) the chances or you slurring your pick up line and looking like an ass is minimal...though nerves will most likely make your brain freeze, and B) I just find that it's easier to be yourself when you don't have any alcohol in you.

Since when does a wingman have to be single? The purpose of a wingman is to distract enemy craft while you shoot one down. If he/she shoots down one also... well, that's why they hand out medals for bravery and courage.

True, a wingman doesn't have to be single, but it helps. That way you don't have to worry about your wingman being hit by friendly fire.

Most guys that go to bars are a-holes for the most part, loud and obnoxious. I agree with previous comments. Bars really aren't the best place to meet members of the opposite sex, unless you're there to "get some" but for relationships? That's probably the last place.

I can spark a conversation with a female based off of a smile in line at Tim Hortons.

It's unfortunate I enjoy being a bachelor.. I like my freedom more than sex at the moment.

You should try being single when you hit that legendary 40 hilltop when your a guy. You can't go to a bar, because every woman see's you in her minds eye wearing a white polyester suite, a black shirt unbuttoned with a bad hair piece and a ton of tacky jewelry ala Saturday night fever trying to hustle young chicks.

(oh wait thats reality, never mind)

doesn't have to be single, but the ones in relationships aren't nearly as willing to go out for a night on the town.

The Darby Arms, deep down on Macleod Trail, near the Westgate Hotel. Nice place, cool people, pool tables. Good place to watch the games.
