Hey I was just wondering if anyone here have recently purchased a car from the US and what kind fo taxes are involved and did you pick it up or ship it back to Canada?

I don't think boarder states are selling to out of state / country consumers any more.
But if you do happen to find one that will, check out Riv. http://www.riv.ca/ it should tell you all you need to know.

Plus there are few threads about this. Do a search for importing vehicles, and you should fnd a few.

Also, make sure that if you do find a dealer that will sell you to you, that the warranty will transfer. A lot of companies now are not transferring warranties to a canadian customer on a USDM vehicle.

Good luck with buying from the states now.. a lot of dealership would NOT sell to Canadian citizen. The requirement to buy a car from south of the boarder requires a driver license issued from the US of A, and a valid address.

A coworker of mine called all over the states and NOT a single one is willing to sell.

FYI, a GM vehicle will honor the warranty after 6 months AND 12000 km.

Subaru is still selling to Canadians. The warranty is also transferrable.

Joe Spitz, the internet sales manager at Carter Subaru (Seattle), even explains the process for Canadians on his website.

Buying used is the way to go. Ideally get something 1 or 2 years old that sill has a warranty (at least in a GM vehicle) to take the worry out of things when buying it somewhere in the US and have to shop over the net as opposed to in peson....but you're still saving a whack of cash over the equivalent here.

but subaru is not honoring cross board warranties. You can find the press release on the subaru website i believe.

Joe specifies right on his site that the US warranty is valid in Canada. I have an '07 Subaru purchased in the US, and the warranty is valid for me. The only difference is that I must pay for repairs upfront, and then have Subaru re-imburse me.

While manufacturers are not obligated to provide warranty coverage to customers that import vehicles, in reality it's bad business to deny a customer warranty. Car companies don't necessarily want to alienate possible repeat customer.

careful when purchasing used, ask where the vehicle came from. Many used vehicles come from rental agencies and I know when I get a car from a rental agency I drive the hell out of it.

Also remember to factor in the fee's associated with purchasing from the States

ie. we can buy a new Sierra from my wife's work loaded for 44k, In the U.S. it would cost us 42K. We need to take out a loan to go across the boarder where as we can get 0% financing here. After all the hassle, fees and interest it doesn't make sense to purchase a new vehicle from the U.S. for us

I guess you could probably get someone you know to buy the car and then just buy it off of them?

Warranty might still be an issue though.

Any idea if a USA address, USA citizenship, but Alberta driver's license work? This is the position my girlfriend is in and she's looking for a new car.

we actually have a time share in Montana with some people and he just bought 2 new trucks just using the address in Montana.

Its probably a different story if you are there in person...when have you heard of a car salesman turning down a sale?

He called all over the state saying I am ready to drive this car back today if you are willing to sell.. no such luck.

As do you need a driver license from the states... that's what the dealership told him. But i guess that's not true since someone with a time share bought it with an alberta driver license?

I wonder......... what is required to get a Montana license? Do you need proof of US citizenship or a Green Card?

Edit- found it. Looks like you need proof of Montana Residence (Utility bill works) and Canadian Birth Certificate or Passport.
