Default Midterms

I know lots of members here are at post-secondary somewhere...

I have a midterm tomorrow. It's a little late in the term for the midterm, but I guess that can be good. The class is a senior level science, heavy in the math and physics. I haven't started studying.

You'd think that after 5 years of university and 12 years of school before that, that I'd know how to motivate myself to study. But I'm on CP and surfing the net.

Any of you care to share your best or worst midterm/ final exam stories? Share how hard it is to get motivation when you are inches from finishing. What is the best part being in school? I need to motivate myself for the rest of the year so what can I get into at university while I still have the chance?!

Physics 259 in first year engineering. I didn't really pay attention all semester, got to the final, and proceeded to do abysmally. The multiple choice section I scored a whopping 4/24. Yes, a monkey could have done metter than I did. I'm pretty sure I proceeded to take an 8/40 on the written portion. The worst part about that was I got 6 of those 8 marks completely guessing on a question.

Yeah, that final gave me a lovely D+ in the course. Funniest thing was, you had to pass the final to pass the course. Apparently my 19% on the test was considered a pass.

Best part about being in school is easily the socializing aspect. School is secondary to everything else. It's like a soap opera with a bunch of different sub-plots. The lowest common denominator generally ends up being booze too.

Oh how I miss Uni.

Finance 317 really did me in. I studied my ass off, more than I even wanted to, and my improvement was marginal over my failing mid-term grade. I managed to squeak by with a C-, two wrong answers away from a complete fail. That stuff is just all bollocks to me, I can't stomach any of that financial crap for the life of me - I'm an HR guy! It's the only class I even came close to failing, I was quite nervous...

I agree with Simmer though, it was more about the socializing than anything else. I seriously showed up for half my classes just to chat with friends and flirt with the business girls. Ahh, good times!

FNCE 317 was a bit of a bitch. The prof was good, but her quizzes were nothing short of dead easy. Needless to say, this shot my midterm confidence levels to unprecedented heights. That midterm was ugly. I failed it fairly miserably.

I had to bust my ass on the final just to pass, but I did manage it. My prof even told me that (at the time) I had set her teaching record for the biggest grade difference between midterm and final (which usually arent far apart).

My worst class ever? Coms 363.

I was in the very first semester that Haskayne stopped offering 363 and instead gave the course to Communications & Culture to run. And boy did they screw it up something fierce.

Every week we had:
- A portion of a Major Group project to hand in.
- A portion of a Major Individual project to hand in.
- A minor weekly Group project to hand in.
- A minor weekly Individual group project to hand in.
- 2 Minor weekly projects to complete in tutorials and deliver.

All of these projects had to be submitted by digital dropbox. AND a printed hardcopy.

The lecture times for almost 1000 people.
- L01: Monday 7-10 am
- L02 Monday 7-10 pm.

So a load of BS every monday. To top the rest of the crap, the professor had used up all of his alotted TA time after the first month. So we had tutorials where he emailed us projects to complete with no present TA, but it had to be submitted via digital dropbox by the end of the tutorial time.

At one point he had nobody left that the Dean of Communications & Culture had to TA every section.

Lets add to the ridiculous torture. At the end of the semester we had to hand in every project we had completed over the course of the entire semester in paper hardcopy. Thats right, we had to re-submit everything, even things we'd already handed in twice. He wanted it a third time. Furthermore, he wanted each member of the groups to hand in a full copy of the group projects.

So, we at the end of the semester we had to hand in:
- Full group project (this was appx. 50 pages and each member of a six member group had to submit the whole thing).
- Full Individual Major Project (over 30 pages)
- Every weekly group project we had done over the semester. (probably another 25 pages, but again, each group member had to hand in a copy, so 25 pages x 6, forgetting the fact these have already been submitted twice each already)
- Every weekly individual project, 15 or so pages. Again, these have been submitted twice already.

Alright. So, at the end of the semester we had to submit 120+ pages of work. Times 1000 students in the course.

The faculty had to rent a 5 ton truck to haul these away for him to mark at his house bacuse there wasnt enough room for all the paper in their faculty.

I didnt receive a grade until March of the next semester.

The professor was promptly fired as soon as the marking was done.

I have never forgiven the Faculty of Communication & Culture, and likely never will.

I almost failed 2 other classes because of the insane workload of this one.

Man that sucks... I hate when you don't got o class every time and the test surprises you... I know it's kinda your own fault but you can't be expected to attend all lectures of 200 and 300 level options when you are doing 500 level major courses at the same time.

FNCE 317 almost did me in as well. I went into it thinking it's like every other 317 course in Management (HROD317, OPMA317, MGIS317, etc), so I figure, I can wing the exams by studying the day before. Man, did I ever get raped on the midterm. I had to study my butt off for the final so I wouldn't fail the course.

For all those complaining about Finance 317, what year did you guys graduate/graduating?

I was class of 2006.

I found that Finance 317 was actually pretty easy. I got an A- in the course and I don't remember busting my arse too bad. I suppose I guess that's why Finance was my major!

i hated that course. same as you - slacked all semester - i had a solid D+/C- going into that final. i sat down a couple days before the test and did EVERY question in that fudging textbook till i understood it. A+ on the final exam.

That approach worked for me on math 221. But since then I haven't NEEDED to study to pass a class, and so I haven't. I am very much one of those slacker students who won't do any work unless I NEED to, which is not as often as I'd like. As a result, I pass but sometimes barely, when I feel as though I could do way better if I wasn't so damn lazy.

I have my Shakespeare midterm Wednesday afternoon. I am feeling pretty good about it.

Which likely means I am doomed. Something is rotten in the province of Alberta!

Haha, welcome to the club. IB turned me into a slacker..

If I applied myself I'm sure I could get As....but Bs come with so much less work attached

Should be studying for my Management Studies midterm on Saturday...but Guitar Hero 3 is just too addicting!

#1 advice would be to not study and go to a early movie before getting a good nights sleep the night before an exam.

I graduated Small Business Management last year and am now in my 3rd year of Small Business Administration, I also plan on returning next year for another six classes to receive the three year Marketing degree.

Biol 313. Intro to genetics. Weeder course. Holy frack, talk about brutal course. Failed the midterm and cried my way through the final. To this day I'm still amazed I passed that course. Does not help when you're a history major and only minoring in biology so trying to do 2 high level history courses and genetics and ecology at the same time. Way crappier than the Calgary sewage plant.

My Geog 340 midterm is tomorrow afternoon, I haven't studied much either. Laissez-faire economics & Urbanization kinda stuff...It's a great elective.

I'm also in the lazy B's club. The jump in effort just doesn't seem worth the result.

My best final was intro to Psych at mount royal. Before the test, I didn't study, went to the campus bar and had 4 beers, then wrote the test. Mark on said final 89%..... Best in the class.
