Pretty much every US based online company is like that. I was looking to ship some car parts from an online place last fall because it was cheaper, but for a total of 300 bucks, the shipping came out to 85 bucks.

I may have complained about shopping at NHL.com before but watch out if you buy multiple items. They quoted me a figure for shipping, some things were back ordered and then they increased my shipping total after the order was processed without letting me know.
Which reminds me, they never got back to me with my complaint. BEWARE!!!

I bought some product out of the US about a month ago for my wife's Bday. The stuff was cheaper there than anywhere I could find it online here in Canada. They charged me $40 shipping at the online store and then UPS charged me another $45 to take it from the border to my house. It cost me over $160 to get $75 worth of product to my house. I won't be making that mistake again.

I suppose you got hit with the notorious UPS 'brokerage fees'? I feel your pain. I like shopping online, especially now with the high Canadian dollar, so I've learned a couple things about cross-border shipping. What UPS is charging you for is the service of looking up the customs code and declaring your package for you. Then they pay any taxes and customs and bill it back to you, but the catch is that they charge you an exorbitant fee for performing this service for you. If you want, you can phone UPS and tell them not to do it for you and you'll do it yourself, which you're perfectly entitled to do. It is quite a pain, however.
My advice is to ship with USPS (United States Postal Service), even if the cost of shipping is higher. If you do, they seamlessly hand it off to Canada Post once it costs the border. That way any customs work is covered by our taxes dollars and all you have to pay any applicable taxes or customs and usually a $5 'handling fee' (which is dumb, but beats the hell out of UPS).
As for what kind of duty you can expect to pay on an item here's a link to a page on the Canadian Border Services that lists what kind of duty you can expect to pay on certain items. Note that there are a number of things that you can bring into Canada duty free, which really lend themselves to cross-border shopping.

I can't find the same hat anywhere else. I'm looking at the Zephyr Wraparound Stretch Fit Hat and they only make that style for certain teams, they don't even make it for the Flames. If you order on NHL.com you can choose size, too. I thought I would try Zephyr's site but they don't even list that specific hat for the Habs on their site. Weird!

On NFL.com shopping site there are a number of things that they won't ship to Canada, and they aren't available on the Canadian equivalent (NFLShop.ca actually shows a Owens 81 49ers " throwback jersey" for sale!)
These online places really do need to smarten up. Sure, Canada is smaller than the US, but it isn't like we are tiny, and we aren't overseas, so c'mon. Take our money and let the USPS take care of shipping.

UPS are the king of the ripoff artists, right up there with Ticketmaster. Their brokerage fees are a total scam.
Never, ever, ever deal with UPS if you have the choice. when I'm buying something online and they ship UPS, I'll fight with them to go Canada Post, USPS or Fed Ex.

I will second never to deal with UPS however I got burned by Fed Ex as well. I had some tires and wheels shipped to me about 3 weeks ago from the US. (paid $100 more for shipping than UPS) and was dinged a $88 brokerage/custom charge that was mailed to me just last week. The reason? Same BS as what UPS tells people.
Count me as not impressed by either UPS or Fedex.

That's strange. Do you know how much shipping would cost normally (ie not the NHL.com shipping rate)? I live in Montreal, so I could find one and ship it to you, if that would save you some money. If you want to try and work something like that out, just send me a PM.

I would suggest Canada Post. Not sure how much good it will do though; their prices are higher because you and I receiving stuff here helps pay for the cost of buddy in Hay River or Alert not having to pay $500 for shipping.
Remember how we like to brag that we are the 2nd largest country in the world? This is where we pay the price for it.
Yep, it sucks sometimes having 1/8 the population as the US.

I'm not sure why Canada being a hockey country should mean that we get better prices??? I agree, I think the shipping fee being that high is absurd, but not because Canada is a hockey country, that's just sill and if you go the BBB, they might tell you the same.

I just ordered a Standings Board from nhl.com, $39.99 item ended up costing me $64.69.
But again with UPS, besides the rip off brokerage fees they're just horrible. I'm still waiting for a guitar amp they are supposed to deliver. They have so far missed 3 scheduled delivery dates, just didn't bother to show up. They've had my item here int he city for 12 days now and have failed to deliver. Hopefully today will be the day. God how I hate that company.

just as an FYI but I was told and it seemed to work once for me that if you get whatever you buy airmailed to you instead of ground you can avoid most other charges. e.g no brokering because you in essence by pass the border and the racket they have going down there. Air mail usually cost more up front but you not only get it next day but overall it may be cheaper depending on what your buying.
