That's funny. I tried like hell to buy it for my brother for Christmas (he's 38 and works in an oil company downtown) but it was sold out everywhere.

Yeah I got it the day it came out I think, and then right after that I heard it was sold out everywhere.

I do appreciate the movie more after thinking about though. For me, it is a better movie in hindsite.
Yeah I think you're bang on with that viewpoint.

Right after I watched this movie, I felt like I had wasted an hour and a half. As the time passed, I realized it was better than I first thought. Some of the lines are freakin' hilarious, and I do want to see it again.

I think in order to like this movie gotta be in the right mood. I personally haven't watched it and I think I would probably fall under the kind of person who wouldn't hate it but wouldn't love it. At least from what I've heard about it.
Maybe it's about time to go watch it....

Napoleon Dynamite was dissapointing not because it was a bad movie, but because it could have been so much more. There is so much to play off of in the ironic hipster department, and in the end, it really just went half-way.

I dunno, maybe its the fact that is about 2-3 years behind the times, but the movie seemed like an MTV job where they set out to do a hipster movie because that's been the latest rage. And when you get corporations doing takes on some form of cultural movement.....all the traits and lingo are there, but whats missing is authenticity that gives it street cred. Even though this wasn't really a corporate job, it felt like it.

In the end I have lots of friends who loved it, but I can't really say I recommend it. Although the visuals built around this movie are great, and those I can.

I'd much rather watch Harold And Kumar....definitely not as stylish but in the end, a very underated, and more importantly, better, movie.

Agreed.

Turned it off half way through. [/b][/quote]
didn't turn it off, but Def. one of the worst movies I have seen in a while...

I am a HUGE comedy fan, and this movie just wasn't funny.

my wife agreed that it wasn't funny either, and she's in her mid twenties so maybe its not just an age thing? I don't know. I did think Harold & Kumar was better, but it wasn't as good as it could have been.

I didn't like it much either.

The acting was pretty good, and I loved the characters, especially Pedro, but it had no heart. And if the filmmakers are expecting to laugh my ass off at these kids because they're losers, well, frankly, that just didn't work for me. I wouldn't laugh at those kind of people in real life, so why would I laugh at them in a movie?

I watched it once and was very disappointed because of the reviews (I was expecting the greatest thing ever). However I watched it again and it was funnier knowing what was coming.

Once I discussed lines with my friends and realized we found just about every line hilarious, I decided to watch it again. Although the first or second time I never laughed out loud much, the third time, I thought about our talk and found everything brilliant. It's totally the best movie to talk about afterwards and the re-watch it.

It's also good to watch in a group of friends. We did this and sure enough it was damn funny having a whole group watch.

It has to be one of the most quoteable movies ever.

Funny thing is, every friend I show it too, doesn't like it initially but as soon as they talk about it, they too watch it again and like it more. (seems to work this way for just about everyone of the people Ive shown it too)

Exactly. I watched it and hated the movie. After a while out you start thinking of certain parts of the movie and you find it hilarious. I decided to re-watch it and have done so many times.

I just watched the movie for the first time and I had tears in my eyes a few times I was laughing so hard.

When Uncle Rico is selling the tupperware to that couple and he pulls that sailboat out of the box and then the guy tries to break the tupperware dish, I'm laughing just thinking about it. Watch the woman's face next time. I went back and watched it a couple times and it got funnier each time.

As for T5's comment "it's 2-3 years behind the times", well, don't forget where you live and where we live. We are 2-3 years behind the times.

Final Judgement: Great Movie.

Added Bonuses -- Blockbuster gives me plenty of time to watch it again and again, there was a very attractive girl behind the counter at Blockbuster, she gave me a free rental because I'm such a stud, that is a lie -- she gave me a free rental because I paid my old late fees, but she was still hotter than Summer Whitley and that's saying something. Little too much salt on my popcorn tonight so that's too bad but other than that things were just perfect.

I thought it sucked the big one. I watched it and thought WTF did I just waste 2 hours of my life for. It's actually more fun to talk with your friends about how stupid it was then to watch it.

I had to watch it a few times to appreciate it too. I love satellite.

Does anyone have any idea the time setting in that movie? Was it the 80's or the present??

His brother was always on the internet but other than that it sure seems like it's set in the 80's.

What's the word for reverse-anachronism?

Edit: Pedro's cousins were definitely modern day gangsters as well and I'm sure there were other things. I guess it's set in the present, but just in a comically unstylish town.

Could of been set in the early 90's as Pedro's cousins looked like they were from the early 90's when the gangster image really blew up. Also the mixtape Napolean got from Kip's g/f definitely didn't sound like it was from the present.

The thing that really threw me off was that Backstreet Boys song. I think that's from 2000 or 2001?? I am sure it wasn't the 90's. So confusing!!

I'm thinking it's messed up like that on purpose. You have the ugly late 70's clothing, a predominantly 80's soundtrack, the internet (and being able to buy a time-machine off it), and the backstreet boys song, plus summer's boyfriend has the combed-forward-then-up type hairstyle that gained popularity in the late '90s/still exists today. My guess is they were trying to make it transcend time maybe?

How old is Uncle Rico? Wasn't he a football star in highschool back in '82?

I thought it was brilliant, very simple and believable plot with fantastic characters. Its not often a comedy comes out with no sex, swearing, and violence and they capitalized. I think it was the best comedy in many years.
