Taxes on online Downloads

Yay, yet another tax with the monies going nowhere. Isn't the fund of money from the blank cd and hdd levy still at a somewhat enormous sum that isn't going back to the artists?

Why are they taxing legally purchased music? Time to boycott a service I never have used - except for free podcast downloads

Nothing, at this point it's "legal" (meaning it hasn't been tested in court, but if they haven't tested it yet is it because they know they'd lose?).

And if the music industry was smart....they'd start some sort of 'free' ad-supported service....where you can download the songs as mp3 and do with them as you please.

Yeah, it has been tested in Canadian court.
In a Supreme Court case it was ruled that libraries putting photocopiers in was not infringing copyrights.
Then the Copyright Board declared downloading for personal use was not infringing.
Then, in a Federal court case where CRIA was attempting to force Canadian ISPs to reveal the names of 29 users who were sharing files, Justice von Finckenstein denied the request saying if putting photocopiers in libraries was not infringing, then putting mp3s in a shared directory was not infinging.
So it has been tested in a number of cases.

I remember reading about the ISP case, but I didn't remember reading about the judgment.
That makes more sense I guess, if downloading is legal, and the levy on CDs and MP3 players is there, then a levy on individual downloads is somewhat consistent, they figure the levy pays for the future sharing of the song? Why not a levy on CD's as well then?
