And while you're all down at the rinks, take it easy on the refs. They aren't getting paid for ANY of it!!

What community do you ref for?
Because I think there are some that do and many that don't, and I'm pretty sure Central Zone doesn't pay the refs. Am I right?

The worst part or minor hockey week is the OT.
No goalies. 5 on 5, then 4-4 etc until potentially 1 on 1.
Even though I think the teams I was on won 4 or 5 times that way over the years, and maybe only 1 loss, it was a harsh way to lose a game.

It's so brutal. I absolutely hate it. Even more than I hate shootouts. At least those leave the kids with some dignity.
I'm and assistant coach on my brother's bantam team this year, it's my first year coaching after being a ref for 3 years. Anyway, earlier in the year, we lost a tournament final 4-3 in overtime, with no goalies. And it's tough on the kids, 'cause they battle so hard only to lose on a 5mph shot from the blueline on a 1-on-3. It's tough to tell them that they should have won.
We're playing in the Minor Hockey Week final this afternoon, and I'm really hoping it's not tied at the end of regulation.
It's a terrible way to end what are usually the most exciting games.

Central Zone refs get paid for the first Minor Hockey Week game in each division (since it also counts as a league game) but do not get paid for any other games during the week.
I've heard that some communities pay their refs during the week, but I think that it is the exception rather than the rule.

I think Minor Hockey and Central Zone should rethink this whole thing for next year. It just seems to me that in the biggest tournament of the year, which means a lot to the kids, the refs should be getting paid. It just leaves the door open for refs who couldn't care less and go out there to ref a terrible game. And I've seen it this year. Some of the refs do a brutal job, and you know they just don't care.
They should be paid. I mean, it's not that much more money to pay these guys, and IMO, it's money well spent.
