That said, and I like Torre, I wonder if he would have been half the manager he is if not for his team spending twice what everyone else does?

I'd say they're finished. Cashman has said they're moving on.

If I was either of them I wouldn't go near it with a 10' pole. They can get almost any position they want - why go into that nightmare?
Toronto and Montreal fans/media are hard on their players, NYY is that x10.
And good for Torre for walking away. It was brutal the way he was toyed with every year.

Yeah, but will they get that type of money...and will they get the same support behing them in terms of players that the Yankees manger will get. I mean this is pro sports people want to win, and the Yankees give you that chance as a manager every year even if pressure comes with it. It's a tough job, but I think the Yankess will try to make it worth their while.

Earlier reading about the Leafs and how free agents are passing them by, and I thought about the Yankees. Are the Yankees able to throw money at free agents and get them to come just because of the money? If MLB was capped like the NHL, would the Yankees have trouble attracting marquis players? What is the average premium players must be offered to play in that sort of media/fan pressure cooker?

I am assuming a $250M roster would not take kindly to a rookie coach so it would have to be someone who is a vet and available.

I'm a Yankees fan, but am glad this has turned out this way. Steinbrenner handled the situation poorly. Telling the entire world that Torre would be fired if they didn't win the ALDS, and then doing an about face on the whole issue here, probably only because of rumblings that guys like Rivera would not be back without Torre. I'm happy to see Torre sticking it to the franchise.

I'd like to correct that Torre didn't exactly quit anything - he turned down an insulting offer from the Yankees considering the success he has had there - a one year deal paying less than what he earned last year. Sure, it's still a lot of money, but come on. I hope, even more, to see the Yankees fall on their faces after this whole debacle.

I totally agree. That starting rotation has been brutal the past few seasons and Torre had nothing to do with it. Pavano was a horrible decision and retreads like Randy Johnson, Clemens, and Petite stifled growth in the younger players.
Also, trying to stuff 15 superstars onto one team and expect success is ridiculous... the Yankees have to get rid of Giambi and Abreu, let ARod walk and start "rebuilding."

On the Radio (Fan960), they said the offer had a base pay of $5M and three bonus clauses. He would of received 1M for winning first round of playoffs, another 1M bonus for the second round and a final bonus of 1M for the World Series. There was an option for a second year I believe which was trigger by a World Series victory.
However, makes a person wonder if the Yankees wanted Torrie gone, and gave him an offer which they knew he would reject.

insulting is an exaggeration..he still woud of been the highest paid manager in the game.
I do however understand his rejection....it was clear that since the offer was a "take it or leave it" type of thing, he was not their first choice and he would of been a sitting duck all year.
He will get a gig soon though...maybe in Pittsburgh or one of those "kind" of places.

I see Joe simply riding off into the sunset, unless he really, really wants to manage again.
I can't see many teams being in his price range - a team like Pitts should be spending money on their own players or trying to acquire some talent on the field, not a manager.
Where Torre would be a good investment, would be on a team on the cusp of making the playoffs, with a largely vet group - *cough* Blue Jays *cough*, where he could put his motivation skills to the test and possibly push the team into a playoff berth. I don't see that happening though.
