Easy first ballot hall of famer. Not the greatest RB in NFL history, but certainly one of them......and he owns the records for career yards and I believe career TD's. Very durable for a guy who isn't that big.

Quality guy too. I've always hated the Cowboys, but had a hard time trying to dislike Emmitt.

good call, dis. Very different from some of his Cowboy teammates (Michael Irvin comes to mind....) Smith was one of the best.

Yeah, Smith in his prime was a great back and definitely is a hall of famer. He was also a class individual who did show up for every down. Still part of me wishes he would have just retired after his last season with the Cowboys as his tank was pretty much empty by then. Still when I was in highschool and Chief jerseys were impossible to find in Kamloops, I had an Emmit Smith Jersey all the way back in 91.

Good, Emmitt should have reitred about 3 years ago. But sadly, I believe he stayed for the record and than to put it out of reach. Great RB but not close to Top 5.

My Top 5
1) Walter Payton
2) Barry Sanders (would be no.1 if he stuck around)
3)Marcus Allen
4) Jim Brown
5) Eric Dickerson

I think I'd be bumping Allen a couple notches down that list, definitely behind James Brown. Allen had a great start to his career, and than was royally screwed over by the Raiders, but once he got to KC his best days physically were long behind him, and he wasn't capable of running for 1000 yards a season. Had the Raiders utilized him properly than yeah he could be a top 5 guy. But due to circumstances I'd take him off that list and replace him with Smith. Still Allen was a classy guy and I hope he does go into the Hall as a Chief just to annay Al Davis.

I am not arguing with your list, but I just find it interesting that the NFL's all time career rushing leader is not apart of your Top 5 running backs of all time.

Furthermore Smith has 3 superbowl rings.

BUT, I am not a NFL junkie, I am just a casual fan. Interesting stuff none the less.

part of it was that he was always getting the ball. In my opinion he is the most overrated player, And i liked the cowboys. It just seemed that he was always getting the ball ball everygame, along with the Rushing yards record he holds the attempts record and has about 1,200 over the next guy. Another reason was, he should have retired the year Walter Payton died, not because Walter Payton died, just because in my opinion that was when he wasn't like the old Emmitt he was OLD Emmitt, But than all the ("he told me to break the rocrd") stuff and then it just seemed like he was holding on for the record and I hate that. My favorite RB of alltime but can't be the best because of not playing long enough is Barry Sanders and when the man said "ok,thats enough" he quit and he quit for good, he had a good 5 years left in him. Barry could have easily made it over 20,000 yards.

Classy individual?

Like the time he pushed away his teammates when they were celebrating after he got a touchdown in the 94 Superbowl (against Pittsburgh).

Or the time in his final season when he reflected his final year in Dallas as "I was a diamond surrounded by trash''

Quit trying to be such a sh*t disturber....

Smith will be a no brainer for first ballot HOFer. Great player, great person and if he joins Fowler's group to buy the Vikings, I will be one happy fan to have people who CARE about football owning that team finally.

Good to retire as a Cowboy though.....Still think this should have been done last year. But what can you do.

Top 5! I have a top 5!

1. Gale Sayers
2. Barry Sanders
3. Walter Payton
4. Earl Campbell
5. Jim Brown

Those are the 5 best backs to play the game, IMO. Screw the retiring early stuff....doesn't matter to me. Obviously, you have to have a bit of longevity to make the list, but I'm not going to punish guys that left early by choice (Sanders, Brown, Campbell) or by injury (Sayers).

That's how I see it.
