Default Murders in Calgary

I read that a man was killed last night and that was the 26th murder of the year here in Calgary...

I was just wondering if someone knew where to find some statistics about homicides. I looked on google but came up empty.

I am interested in knowing- what is the average in Calgary, what is the average in Canada and the States, etc... all sorts of stats.

I ask this because 26 murders seems like a lot. I thought there was usually around 1 per month around here (but maybe I'm dreaming of the past)?

go to the middle of the page for stats.

No 06 stats, but homicides are definitely up.

Here's the Calgary Police Service's annual report from 2006 (it includes stats for 5 years from 2002): http://www.calgarypolice.ca/news/pdf...eport_2006.pdf . Last year, there were 26 homicides in Calgary, which was the highest over the five year period. It will probably break 30 this year.

Oddly, sex crimes and assaults have been declining over the years.

Sadly, this is a side effect of a booming city and economy. If there is a positive, there are still very few random homicides of strangers killing strangers. In general, if you don't get involved in shady behavior or with shady people, the chances of being killed in a homicide are still extremely low in Calgary.

I thought we had a big number, then I talked to a friend in Philly. I believe the number he gave me in August was 500.

true, but i hate putting a positive spin on the numbers of murders here by comparing it to an american city. 1 is too many.

I understand that our numbers are still extremely low, but I thought they were lower, which they were. I also guess that with the influx of people and money to our city, that sort of thing tends to increase.

I also know lots of them are not random... but some of them are relative tragedies just the same.
