Still not entirely sure how he manages to gain powers from others. Does he pull out a piece of people's brains and then eat them? or does he just need to look at them to see how they work? Would some kind of x-ray/cat scan be good enough?

Last episode, I was asking myself the same question. His hands were covered in blood, but nothing around his mouth. I would think by that alone that he doesn't eat the brain. He was a tallented watchsmith before becoming the evildoer we see today. The translation lies within that somewhere... not with eating the brains IMO.

I've always wondered about this. Maybe the evolution that gives people their powers manifests itself in new structures/organs in the brain, Sylar needs to open them up to see how they work and is capable of altering his brain to work like theirs upon observing this. Or maybe there is a substance in the brain that he must somehow absorb. The first explanation probably fits teh whole watch repairman thing a little better.
Those are the two best explanations I can come up with. Unless I have missed something all they really show us is Sylar cutting into people's brains and then poking around.

He removes the brains and rubs them all over his naked body.
From this last episode, part of me thinks that he's still in an illusion and the girl isn't really dead. His powers didn't work, and when he ran outside the shack, his hands weren't bloody like they were a minute earlier. Just a guess.

Yeah, I think that's the idea. He opens them up to see what makes them 'tick'.

I suppose you could see how their brains are wired, so you know how they do what they do. Kind of like looking at code for binary 1's and 0's of your computer.

All I was thinking in that episode is when Sylar's keeper appeared as two chicks, I would have done that, had a smoke and then killed her.

Yeah thats not a bad idea. The synapses in the brain fire like binary code. Maybe he just sees the patterns and duplicates them.
For the record, I also would have done the two chicks then killed the illusionist

As a clock maker Sylar just needs to open their heads to see what "makes them tick" then he learns how the power in question works and can do it himself.

This is what I think as well, she is not dead just testing to see what he would do. She is showing how she can help him by demonstrating her powers. The only problem is why would she show him her real (fat) body, if it is still an illusion?

Maybe that fat body is just part of the illusion. Maybe she actually looks like the girl in the "illusion", but showed the fat body to make the whole thing more believable. From the viewpoint of the studio its probably cheaper and easier to use the same actress for both the real and illusion scenes.
As for the learning how the power works thing, then why does he need to open up the brain specifically? We're just wondering about the specifics of hwo this works.

Brain tells body what to do? Certain nerve impulses tell muscles or whatever to do something.

They have always alluded to the illusion girl being overweight. When she was babysitting the techno-whiz kid (i cant seem to remember the names of characters I dont care for) she was always eating fatty foods and once turned into an older fat, black lady and said that *might* be what she actually looks like.
I can't see why you'd stick the former 'most dangerous man in the world' in a jungle with just a girl whos vulnerable to a smack in the head. Assuming the agency hasnt fallen apart, They must have expected him to kill her, as a test and/or see if he can actually regain his powers.
He cant tell if the power works alone, he has to put an 'illusion' on somebody.

Her real name is Betty. It's all explained through the Graphic Novels on NBC.

Did anyone watch last night's episode? I thought it was better than the previous episodes and it is starting to pick up. I'm very curious how Matt is going to save Molly, and to top it off the man in her dreams is Matt's dad . I'm still undecided about the Mexican brother and sister duo, everytime they're on I want to change the channel. I wish Peter and Hiro would have been in this episode but overall I enjoyed this episode with the action starting to pick up again.

How about Micah's cousin Monica? Mimicking stuff you see on T.V is a sweet kickass power and It will be interesting to see where she fits in with the overall story line.
I think it's safe to say that the boogeyman/Matt's dad did not push Kaito Nakamura off the roof so that question still remains unanswered. Man heroes is starting to pick up again. So exciting!!!

agreed, the new story line for Matt is pretty interesting. The brother/sister thing looks to be getting better now that slyar is there also.

I wonder if she could videotape other heroes performing their powers, watch it on tv, then learn how to do what they do.... Or is her power limited to performing the feats of us ordinary folk?
