Default Ontario impounding speeder;s car every 25-30 minutes.

Ontario's new law that allows police to impound cars and suspend cars for a week if the car is speeding over 50kph is resulting in a LOT of impounding. The law has been in effect for a week and over 200 cars have been impounded.

Edit: could a mod please fix the thread title? Thank You

Awesome, I think if the driver is caught and he's 18 or under they should feed the car into a crusher.

wouldn't it make sense to do that to the older drives who at that point in their lives should know better? atleast at 18 you can write it off as youthful stupidity.

Here is an article from the day the law came into effect.
Quote:
Ontario police said Monday afternoon that 47 vehicles had been impounded across the province in the first hours since the Safer Roads for a Safer Ontario Act came into force Sunday at midnight.

That shouldn't be able to be used as any sort of excuse. If a person is going to hide behind "youthful stupidity", they don't deserve any sort of adult privilage whatsoever, especially if it involves piloting a vehicle.

All said and done, speeders that exceed these limits should really have their license revoked for a period of at least 5 years without a chance to defend themselves. The less idiots on the road, the better.

On a somewhat related note: My 16 year old sister in law was caught speeding on 22x going 140 passing someone in the 80 zone before it went to one lane east of Deerfoot. Stupid cop reduces it to 20 over so she doesnt lose her license. How does this teach her anything.....

My neighbor's 17 year old son was fined $600 for doing 160 kph on the Trans Canada Highway near Cochrane this past summer. My neighbor went one step further than the judge - he sold his son's Jeep.

It probably scared the crap out of her. For how long is the only question... I think losing your license for 50 over is rare, and probationary licenses are more common.

Its the option of the police officer, or was in y2000 when I was stopped for going 52 over the limit.

I can tell you its an automatic court appearance and will likely result you in a 800$+ cost (fine + damn victim services fund bs)

It was this way in Ontario until this month -- 50+ over the limit resulted in a notice to appear in court (not a speeding ticket). A friend was caught a few years ago doing 160 in a 80-zone and was only pulled over for a couple of minutes before being allowed to continue on his way. Like many others, he used a Traffic Ticket company to fight the charges and it was eventually reduced to a speeding ticket (not dangerous driving) over a year later. It still cost him quite a bit of money...

I really, really like this new rule in Ontario because it has immediate consequences for the driver -- a seven day suspension and impound. And clearly, there's a need for this type of punishment just due to the sheer volume of drivers that have been caught. I'm sure people will still contest these tickets and have the charges reduced, but at least the suspension will keep them off the roads for a week...

Shouldn't your parents be teaching her a lesson too?

I'm the type of guy who think's speeding is less dangerous than many other offenses that never get punished (ie, impeding traffic in a passing lane, awful merging skills, lack of signal light usage), but if you're going 50km's over anywhere, you pretty much deserve whatever fine they give you.

And kudos to the guy who took his son's Jeep away. It will teach him to be responsible, and also prevent his friends for making fun of him for driving a chick car.

That's the cause of my frustration on the road. How lazy can people be to not signal? Do it ALL OF THE TIME.

I also speed a bit, and I agree with you. Excessive speeding (especially 50km/h over) shoudl be punished very severely. Ontario has this one right. It's good to see them enforce it as well.

She is my sister in law and yes they should be, but taking away the car isnt an option since she lives outside the city. No way to get to school or work if she doesn't have the car.

Well as long as you can still go 125 in an 80 zone, I guess I am ok with it.

But can you text while doing it? Glancing occasionally at the road.

Ummm... when I'm texting while driving I certainly am not going to look at the road. I might make a spelling mistake!

Yeesh!
