As in something decent for surfing the internet, writing up stories in Word, sending email? Or something decent for playing WoW and NHL2K8?

For wireless, I would recommend to stay away from the 802.11n products at the moment. They're 2-3x more expensive and while they display amazing statistics like "50% more range! 6x faster!" these numbers really don't mean too much and some reviews I've read show that in some circumstances they perform worse than older hardware.
I would still stick with the older more mature 802.11g products.

Basic Specs:
Intel Core2Duo ~ 1.8ghz
2 gigs of ram
160 gig hard drive (though 80 is likely *enough*)
802.11g or draft n wireless (built in)
WinXP. For the love of all that is holy, avoid Vista.

Across from McMahan Stadium there is a store in the DQ stip mall that sells off lease Dell computers. There are a few descent laptops with wireless if you arent looking for anything fancy. Any Linksys wireless router will do, then download your choice of cracked firmware and reflash it. I prefer Svetoff Chili Spot.

don't need much to be honest ...
don't want to buy crap, but I don't need to stretch it out for gaming and video.
web publishing, working on stories in front of the big screen with games on ... that kind of thing.
The DELL looks great, but probably more than I need (saw their flyer on the weekend)

Try hitting the SAIT computer store. They sell cheap laptops that were purchased from Toshiba for use by students. I still use my SAIT laptop and it's been beaten to hell. It's about 3 years old and has more then enough power to accomplish what you want.
Should run you about $500-$700 if not cheaper.

Seconded.
I was told by a co-worker that the #1 most common question Microsoft recieves regarding Vista is: "How can I get my money back?"

Mem express is great for desktops and parts but i find their laptops overpriced.
However i was there over the weekend and they had this awesome looking white LG laptop. It is the only 15.4inch laptop that i saw with a full keyboard, with the number pad.

Personally, for reliability I've never gone wrong with Thinkpad.
They are more expensive than Dell, but the difference is the build quality.

This was true maybe 3 or 4 years back. Not the case anymore. I work at SAIT and picked up a few used ones back then. Now they are way overpriced. $650 for a used laptop that a has an old celeron processor with 512mb of ram and not even a dvd burner. You can buy a brand new one for that price.
Oh and I would totally stay away from Vista too.

How do you stay away from Vista in a new computer? Do they offer new laptops with WindowsXP?

We recently picked up a laptop from Staples after looking around at various places. It's a Toshiba and was on sale so it seemed like a pretty good buy. I have had a D-Link Router connected to my desktop for a couple of years now with no problems. The new laptop has a built in wireless card and it was a piece of cake to get it up and running.
