I thought this was against the law? Isn't this some kind of obstruction of justice?

Good lord I have friends that live in that area and attended many parties there in my high school days...
That is just awful I am not one to jump to the "Calgary has gone evil" card but something like this reallly makes you wonder what is going on in this city

No kidding. If it were me, I wouldn't even care if it was a family member who did it. They'd be getting turned in as we speak.

Who ever did this is a psychopath.
I grew up in Queensland from grade 3 to about grade 11. The more store sucked, and right about the time we moved out the place was starting to go downhill and has gotten way worse ever since.

That is nuts. I'm used to it because I lived in Edmonton from September 2002-April 2007 so I saw alot of crazy things there on the streets. I've only been in Calgary a few weeks but i've seen a few more shady things here then i've expected. This is absolutely disgusting. A pickaxe to the head? I really hope they catch the person(s) who did this and find out why they did. That's absolutely disturbing.
In Edmonton I always went to houseparty's where they were my friends or close friends of friends so it wasn't bad at all and i'd never see anything at those because we knew almost everyone. But one time I went to one that I had no idea who was throwing it and a few women were raped and someone got slashed in the stomach. I just don't get people who do things like this. Sickening.

I don't quite understand why they would preform an autopsy, though. I mean, it seems pretty obvious to me why he died. Is it just for formality's sake?

If he was on drugs or something....it helps the cops piece together what might have happened.

Unfortunately in cases like this, it isn't. The police don't have the power to detain people and compel them to give up information. They could be called to testify, and then charged if they fail to appear, answer questions, or perjure themselves, but no prosecutor will call a witness unless they have some idea of what they're going to say or that they have something to say.
Those kids'll eventually give it up though. It's just a matter of enough people pressuring them to do so. Sounds gang-related and sloppy. I'd expect arrests fairly soon. What a horrible story though. There's some nasty stuff going on in Calgary these days. Condolences to the parents. And to the poor people who have to live with the images of that night.
edit: I should note that, strictly speaking, any act which obstructs a police officer in the lawful execution of his or her duty can technically be grounds for a charge of obstruction. In cases like this it's impracticable however, and there's not much police can do except continue to ask questions until someone answers them.

Couple of things:
1) An autopsy is done to satisfy the criminal code of canada and thus the courts.
2) Witnesses are not compelled to speak with police. In fact, nor are bad guys for that matter. Not talking to police is not obstruction. Lying to them or misleading them can be considered obstruction (an arrested fella lying about who he is for example) or public mischief (a witness intentionally giving false info about a crime vehicle, etc).

What about if a witness is brought to court....does he have to answer any questions the defense or persecution might have?
How come 'pleading the 5th' is ringing a bell here?
I'll go look it up.

I guess they could get subpeoned yes. But I would think it's a gamble if the crown has no clue what their witness will say.
For the record, 'pleading the 5th' is american and is about self incrimation. So unless you actually had a part in the crime, it really wouldn't have any relevance. I believe section 13 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the Canadian version.

Yeah I saw that latter part.
The witness couldn't lie though, right?....I mean if they confess saying that they saw what happened, who did it, etc, etc....technically they could get subpeoned and be forced to confess in court or be in danger of contempt(if they lie in court).
Or something like that.
Correct me if I'm wrong....and excuse me for asking questions.

as someone who has used a pickaxe on several occasions to hack into hard, frozen ground... I can't imagine what a blow to the face with one of those things would feel like.
It does, however, leave me wondering if it was the blade or the point side of the thing that he/she used.
OUCH!

Extremely sad and disturbing.
When I was in High school, Queensland/Deerrun had become quite ghetto and alot of the shady characters in our school came from there. There's a lot of shocking things about this story but I wouldn't say it being in Queensland is one of them.
Hearing something like this makes me glad I've moved on the safer streets of Vancouver

Well, you are correct, you are supposed to tell the truth in court so if he said he had info then didnt present that info in court, he would be lying.... and would thus be struck down by God himself (assuming he swore on the bible).

I live in Queensland, and I don't think it's that bad.
I can't wait for the day that the More store is gone though. About 10 years ago those s ripped my brother off! He was buying something, put it on the counter, put a $20 bill on the counter as the guy was ringing in the items. He turns away for a second to grab a chocolate bar or something and the clerk takes his $20. So the clerk finishes putting in the amounts to the till, then asks for money to pay the bill, swearing that he never saw any money on the counter.
Wish they decided to leave after the 2nd torching.
Anyways, Queensland isn't as shady and rough looking as people are saying. But on a side note, I do know the victim of one of the car torchings. Small world.
