Default 2007-08 Calgary Hitmen / WHL thread

After week 1, the Hitmen are ranked as the top team in the country!

http://www.whl.ca/news/?id=7529

This is going to be a fun year for the Hitmen... this is one fast team. Just ask Kootenay.

Nicely done Snakeeye, was hoping we could get a 'Dub thread going on here.. I don't visit whlfans.ca enough to be a regular contributor.

Get my first look at the Giants on Saturday when they raise the Mem. Cup banner against Kelowna (who they beat tonight). Hitmen are here October 12, definitely have that date circled in my Daytimer.

Yup. The only key player we lost who was eligible to return was Brodie Dupont. Hitmen have a veteran team this year. It was mentioned in one article that collectively, the Hitmen roster has played 150 more games than any other team in the Dub.

Edit: And Keegan Dansereau, who was sent home with an attitude issue, though Kisio is trying to work that out.

Hitmen improve to 4-0 with a 4-3 win over a very good Brandon team. 37 saves by Spence in the win, and Galliardi now has seven points in four games. Not a bad pickup.

Looking forward to seeing what this team can do when they get Seabrook and Mercer back.

Ice finally got off the schneid tonight.. 5-4 win in Lethbridge.

Giants say that they have sold 10,000 tickets for the home opener against Kelowna tomorrow, they expect 12,000 even though the Lions play the Stamps, and the Canucks are on TV at the same time.

Kisio has pulled the trigger on his first big move of the season. The Hitmen sent Keegan Dansereau, who had been sent home, and Brett Plouffe to the Broncos for defenceman Paul Postma and forward Kyle Bortis.

Figured the trade of Dansereau was coming, but adding Plouffe in was a bit of a surprise. Kisio is definitely looking to go for it all though. Postma has played a lot more time in the dub than Plouffe has. His experience should help.

Ouch...

I've never been a fan of Kisio, but he's starting to turn me around when he can find 16 year olds like Matt MacKenzie, who's already got a goal and an assist and is +5 on defence.

Ice lose tonight 4-1 to Spokane...

Went to the Giants/Rockets game tonight. Kelowna had 9 shots, outshot 16-0 in the first period. Big crowd tonight too over 12,000.. And I'm kinda glad I didn't make the trip to BC Place tonight.

EDIT: I also see that Plouffe was later dealt to Tri-City by the Broncos..

Good god... outshot 48-9? Nice showing Kelowna. Judging by the box score, it looks like they were more intersted in fighting in the third than not embarrassing themselves.

The youngest team in the league have started to pick it up, with three wins in a row, including a 7-2 rout of the Regina Pats. The Rebels have a heck of a lot of talent on this team now, arguably the most they've had since the Memorial Cup win. Sure, they are not going to fare all that well against an elite team like the Hitmen but, then again, not too many teams in this league will. After saying that there were some signs in the Rebels-Hitmen game in Red Deer that it could be another good rivalry this season. Yes, the Rebels are young, there will be growing pains but there is the chance that J.D. Watt will get to play a few big games before this season is out. I like Brian Sutter as coach too. He's not quite as defensively rigid as his younger brother.

I like the Hitmen trade. Dansereau, as much as I rate him, simply had to be moved. Postma is a good pickup. Kisio did well here I think and has been getting better as coach and GM for a while now. Any love for Kisio yet, Snakeeye?

Ice get by the Blades 4-3 in OT tonight..

Vancouver and Chilliwack heading to OT themselves. It'll be interesting to see how the season series plays out between these two. The playoff series ended rather interestingly last year, and even though Watt (who started it all) is gone, the 'Wack aren't too fond of their big-city rivals. They play at the Coliseum Friday should be a dandy, even though judging by the box score tonight was a fairly tame affair..

Jagger: Watt is a floater.

Hitmen lose 3-2 to Regina. Sounds like Theissen was pretty damn one sided in his officiating, but Calgary simply wasn't ready to play the first two periods of this game. They went down 3-0, battled back, and hit the post twice trying to tie it up.

Jagger - I'm warming to him, but it took him what? eight years? to finally build a team that isn't mediocre?

That very well might be. I was simply responding, admittedly tongue firmly in cheek, to a comment by Snakeeye that Watt wouldn't get to play any big games this season with a young Rebels team.

Watt did score a big OT goal the other night for the Rebels though!

Haha I know.. Just warnin' ya that he disappeared in the playoffs last year for the Giants..

How has Landon Ferraro looked?

Nice recovery from the embarrassing loss to Regina. They bombed the hell out of Swift Current tonight, winning 7-2.

Eric Frere scored his first WHL goal - in his 150th game.

Really happy for Eric. I always liked Eric when he was with the Rebels. He reminded me of a young Derek Meech at first but for some reason he didn't rate with Brent Sutter. Good on him for his goal.
