Obviously. But if you are overweight, just dieting without exercise is missing 50% of the puzzle. I'm talking about people wanting to lose weight, not people already at a healthy weight.
Exercise regimes give you more energy, discipline, and make you feel 1000% times better. You are less likely to eat unhealthy if you start your day with a workout.

Absolutely.
While I do advocate the HIIT workout for a quicker and better 'result'....I don't think many people realize that a simple walk can also count as exercise.
Nor do they know that gaining muscle(yes that means going to the gym when you're fat)....is probably the best thing you can do to keep the weight off long-term. Outside of the complete lifestyle change of course.

Since I started this thread I decided that I'm going to tough it out. Exercise and cutting junk food out. I've lost 5 lbs. Running every 2nd night and watching what I eat. Got to admit hard but not so bad. Thanks so far to the supporters and %^&@ you to the non-believers as well as the arrogant people who are not helpful at ALL. It does not take an intelligent person to figure out that hard work helps you lose weight. I hope when I lose my weight I'm not arrogant person who gets off by pretending to be a know it all. Pity help your soul.

Good luck Sled. One last pitch, spend 8 bucks and get the paperback version of the GI diet, any Chapters. The basic education in the first three chapters will be well worht it. I am not a reader either but it was very good to know. Especially becuase of the way you have decided to shed the weight already. I guarantee this will help. There is no strict diet or real diet anyway. It is just educating yourself on the good and the bad and the really bad.

Well this thread is a bit old, but my wife joined Weight watchers at the start of October and 8 weeks later she has lost 16 pounds which was 10% of her body weight, and thats just by diet alone. No matter how much I would tell her to watch portion sizes, or not eat certain things it just seemed to mean nothing coming from me. I joined with her since they had free signup and went for 4 weeks myself. I'm also down 17 pounds myself and thats without any much added excercise (evidently I needed to watch what I was eating a bit closer too). The biggest change for me is that I am much more conscious in thinking about what I eat, we also have pretty much stopped eating out too. I like that I can still have snack type stuff on any day, just have a very small portion. Whereas on something like body for life, it felt like you denied yourself all pleasures in life for 6 days and than binged the last day. With the holliay's coming up I'll see if I can keep some discipline and continue to move my wieght downwards.

My brother is the prottotypical atkins guy too, eats piles of bacon and meat but no buns. We will see what the long term affects are.
I hate eating at my folks because everything is Atkinsized and tastes like crap. Also you have to hear about how great Atkins tastes, but I have learned as the skinny guy, you don't ever question anything when it comes to dieting, you just agree.

I know what you mean. In my family, us boys are average weight, but the girls fluctuate. They are constantly on diets and comparing results. Kinda funny because they're not really overweight. Maybe just a bit, but IMO, a chick with a couple extra pounds is usually more attractive than a chick with a couple too few.
The Atkins phase has passed though. It was bad for awhile. Somehow it just seems wrong to be worrying about the atkinsization of a xmas or tgiving feast. You're here to eat, I say!

I gain and lose weight pretty quickly. I'm almost 6'2" with a reasonable amount of muscle mass and at my worst (final year of university), I was 223lbs, but now I am at 193lbs (just 2 years later). That just comes from better eating habits (hardly any fast food) and being more busy.
The other big thing was limiting myself to beer and junk food only one day on weekends.
Even still, if I take holidays and sit around the house for a few days, I will gain weight right away. I don't understand why some of the laziest people I know are also the skinniest. I almost think that because I let myself go once, my body is always trying to get back there.

I don't get it when people talk about weights less than 5lbs. For 3 years I worked in a production plant that had all sizes of scales. On any given day, my weight would fluctuate up to 5lbs. Lunchtime usually involved pasta. Copious amounts.
Morning weight: 195
Afternoon weight: 200
5pm weight*: 197
*Final 10 minutes of shift was usually spent in washroom

Interesting comparison:
My GF went back to University to do another degree and try to get into med school. She ended up taking a Kinesiology class about proper diet, and one of her projects was a diet assessment. So naturally, she chose me. Her idea of being fair was to have another girl in her group do the actual assessment so I wouldnt feel I had to lie to impress my GF.
The results were fairly startling. Evidently I should have died years ago. Heres a sample.
Drink: Over 60% of my liquid intake is alcoholic and excessive. The remaining 40% is almost exclusively water.
Food: On an average of 21 meals a week, 17 of my average weekly meals I eat in bars, fast food, or dont eat at all.
Exercise: Gym time is currently very erratic, but I'm in a bit of a slump and havent gone to the gym in almost a year. I do however play on 3 soccer teams, so I play alot of games.
Health Assessment: I should be dead. And if I'm not dead now I soon will be.
Also, I should note, that whole "use a different group member" strategy was a load of crap. That crazy chick ran away from me screaming and flailing her arms going immediately to my GF and telling her about the whole episode. Fantastic. Her prof asked if I wanted to be a guest speaker, but hey, I have limits.
