Just got back..used vrbo.com to find a 2br condo in Kihei for what worked out to be $110 CAD per night.
Certainly see us going there again without question. Having been to Mexico earlier this year, not a comparison. The ability to drive and feel safe being the biggest, the environmental awareness and the preservation of island culture is a nice capper.
Did the touristy stuff, snorkeling, up the volcano, drove halfway to Hana, etc etc but could go back and do a bit more, while still having half the trip just as relaxing beach days.
Highly recommended if one hasn't been there.

Do you mind if I pm you? I'm going to Maui end of October for honeymoon. I'd like to get some info off of you! Thanks.

Be sure not to book any tours in advance if you are going to Hawaii.
Cheap ticket and tours is the best deal going. One is right across from the Post office in a dodgy second floor office in Honolulu.
The second is just up the street from the McDonalds I believe on Waikiki.

Maui has a couple of PGA courses. How much they cost and how easy it is to book on, if at all, I do not know.

A little late, but I'd like to add. I've never been to Hawaii, but have booked a family trip for a week on Molokai. We chose this island because it's supposed to be the most "Hawaiin". Rented a beach front house which was extremely reasonable. If anyone's ever been to Molokai, I'd certainly take suggestions for things to do.

IMO the best golf value is the public course in Honolulu along the canal.
Very affordable and a great driving range.
I golfed there 8 times the last time I was there.
