Good 'un.
In the remake vein, how about 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers? Great cast: Donald Sutherland, Leonard Nimoy, Jeff Goldblum and the very lovely Brooke Adams.

I liked the original Night of the Living Dead, the late-sixties version. Has anyone mentioned The Evil Dead?

Alittle OT but I have to mention "The Faculty" but not because it was a great movie but because it had 4 incredibly hot cast members, Jordana Brewster, Famke Janssen, Selma Hayak, and Laura Harris. It was a okay horror/thriller movie.

Stephen King's "It" was pretty scary.
I also liked "Christine", "In the Mouth of Madness" and (mentioned before) "The Thing". All by John Carpenter.

If you love the 80's campy horror stuff, try finding a copy of Blood Diner.
The scene with the deep fried head is particularilly good.

I thought "The prince of darkness" was a good movie back in the day."The Changling" is a freaky ghost movie but i haven't watched it in over 10 years.

Salem's Lot.
Who can forget vampire boy Danny Glick scratching the window of the kid from James at Sixteen. Brrrrrr. Still gives me chills.

Despite the fact that recent remakes have tarnished its image, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is bad ass. In fact, so are a lot of the movies from the 70s they've made remakes of. There is a good reason these studies were willing to spend millions remaking these movies.

seriously though, something a little lesser known and nothing particularly horrifying or scary about it, but.... "Behind the Mask: The rise of Leslie Vernon" was well done and has drawn comparisons to "Man Bites Dog"

In addition to the original Phantasm thatI mentioned earlier I would add the following....
Omen (the original of course)
The Serpent and the Rainbow (creepy 'real' zombie movie)
Children of the Corn - Shot so well it's scary when it doesn't need to be. "He wants you too, Malachi!"

I like almost anything by John Carpenter but Halloween and The Thing are the pinnacle of his career. Must see scary movies.
A Nightmare on Elm Street gets a bad rap because Freddy Krueger became an icon in the sequels, getting cheesy one liners and losing any fear the character once had. The original is a fantastic movie however, and still delivers creepiness chills and jumps.
The original Dawn of the Dead may not be the scariest but it just plain rules. Imagine what you would do if you were stuck in a shopping mall during a zombie holocaust. This movie covers every scenario and then some. The gore can never be topped. It's not overly graphic either. Romero and Savini toned it down by using orange blood that gives it a comic book like feel. And the zombies have a cheesy blue skin look. 11 stars out of five.

For ones that havent been mentioned...
The Other (1972) - Creepy twins, crazy grandma, pure awesome
The Blob (1988 - Remake) - Awesome effects, dissolving people, nuff said
Eraserhead (1977) - David Lynch's seminal first feature, creepy, post-apocolyptic, and bizzarely whacked-out
The Devil's Backbone (2001) - Guillermo Del Toro (Hell Boy, Blade 2) made alot of sweet Spanish movies, this is the best (and damn scariest) one
Session 9 (2001) - Just plain goddamn wicked. This movie scares the living hell out of everyone. Don't miss it.
Videodrome (1983) - Wow wow wow wow wow. Blows your mind and then chases it into a clausterphobic pit. Cronenberg's best.
In The Mouth Of Madness (1994) - Based on a wicked Lovecraft short story, Sam Neil gets progressively more insane with each passing scene. Love it.
Alien (1979) - Great effects, great director, great plot, great everything. More scares and less action that the sequel, and just as great!

This is one of the only DVDs I have ever bought. I love this movie and once had a nightmare about the lady in the radiator. Not everyone likes it though.

Yes! I had forgotten about this one. Great, great surprise when I rented it! Excellent movie.
In the Mouth of Madness is another one mentioned that I wholeheartedly agree with.
