On Peters, I don’t put much stock in what he has to say on his hiring day. Did Gulutzan say something bad on his first day to lead us to believe he was a bad coach? I think most coaches will say the right things on day one regardless.

I put more stock in his track record and hard facts.

- Losing record as a coach in the NHL
- None of his teams have qualified for the playoffs in the NHL
- Medicore coaching record in the AHL (Didn’t Win a playoff round)
- Average coaching record in the WHL (outside of one excellent year)
- Terrible coaching record in College hockey
- Won a playoff round in only 1 of 10+ years over 4 different levels of hockey
- Not sure if other candidates were considered

Do I want him to succeed in Calgary? Yes, I’m a Flames fan. Do I think it will work? Based on his track record, no.

Treliving and Burke should both be fired if Peters doesn’t work out.
Are we pretending his four international gold medals don't count now?

Gold Medal at the Ivan Hlinka
Gold Medal at the 2015 and 2016 World Championships
Gold Medal at the 2016 World Cup

Good chance he gets a 5th gold medal this year too.

If he's good enough for Hockey Canada and Mike Babcock he's good enough for the Calgary Flames.

Eric Staal ws relieved to be playing hockey in Minnesota. Where does he ever discuss that being connected directly to the head coach?

I think "a lot of elite hockey left" is a huge stretch when applied to a 33-year-old forward who is coming off his best season in eight years.
There is a different profile for established players with 20+ net worth. Nothing Peters can do about it but he has a lot of these guys to deal with. He does not have a good track record with this profile of player.

Staal was just glad to get out of Carolina to the NYR.

Since he left Carolina Staal has had 2 elite level seasons with Minnesota.

That is a significant amount of elite hockey. Staal was not done at age 29 as it appeared to be with Peters.

If Peters would have been able to manage him to play close to his potential it certainly would have made Carolina a much better team over the last 2 seasons.

Maybe it was just a one-off situation but it will be a significant factor in his success as a coach for the Flames.

This is a good point.

As this season went I I felt more and more like Gully was out of ideas and didn't have the respect of the team.

You can tell by listening to Peters he has a bit more of that no- nonsense Sutter type demeanour.

I think this will go a long way with a young core / group.

All fair. I want him to succeed too, and agree if this falls on it's face the management should fall on their sword.

With some roster changes adding more forward depth, hopefully it gives the new coaching staff a better opportunity to hit the ground running.
I don’t really care either way what your personal opinion of me is. I have better things to do than to be forum monitor. If you enjoy being forum monitor and posts get you annoyed or upset you might need to take a break from all of this

I have stated numerous facts on Peters and his record over every level of hockey. Let’s see what Peters can do, hopefully it’s good. I just don’t see any reason for encouragement based on his entire coaching history and numbers over every level of hockey, not just the NHL. I put stock into what a coaches record is rather than what they say on day 1.

If you like the hire, great. I stated my opinion and never asked you for yours. You’re entitled to believe what you want. Allow me to do the same, thanks!

I think his NHL coaching record is more relevant than any other record he has.

Again...by Staals own admission, it had nothing to do with peters and everything to do with his lack of enjoyment playing the game. He needed a re-set and it worked in Minny.

But that does not justify your obvious attempts to intentionally ignore and severely undermine his professional accomplish-ments. I think it is abundantly telling that you dismiss his WHL and Memorial Cup championships out of hand.

When Peters was hired in Carolina I’m sure he had all the same intangible aspects during his hiring day interviews. His record in the NHL speaks louder than his intangible feel.

I’m a Flames fan and hope it works out. I’m not confident in it however.

I can’t quantify bravado, ambience or aura. I can quantify his NHL record.

Yea, and like I said, for you those "better things" include being an enduring rain cloud and repeating the same negative thing over and over. Different strokes for different folks I guess. You can feel free to spend your time however you like and think it's productive.

When I see someone posting things like "Fire Peters" + "Dream coach" without substance I think it deserves to be called out. You have the option to ignore it. Instead you eventually elaborated and put fourth your first coherent thoughts on the new information on today which I think raised some fair points.

As I said earlier, I'm still pretty intent to reserve judgement until we see how it plays out on the ice. But after hearing what we did today I'm a lot more optimistic than I was yesterday as I think the change in tone and a sterner sense of leadership will benefit this young group.

I did indicate he had one excellent year in the WHL. I like evaluating an NHL coach based on his NHL record as the biggest factor. I like Peters as Canada coach and think maybe he’s more suitable for that role based on his excellent record internationally. I’m not a fan of his suitability for Calgary coach based on his NHL record.

If you don’t like my opinions I can’t help you. If you want to be hopeful good for you. Either way it doesn’t matter to me. I stated my opinion and various facts. Like them or don’t, it’s irrelevant to me.

I want Peters to succeed. If he had a better track record in the NHL I would be more encouraged. He doesn’t.

I liked what Peters had to say today as well. But...I still question the Flames deciding not to pursue guys with proven NHL track records. If Peters comes in and has a lot of success in Calgary it wont matter. If the Flames can't take another step forward in the next couple of seasons, people will be wondering whey they didn't get a guy like Vignault when they had the chance.

Here's hoping Peters can make the most of this though, as a Flames fan I sincerely hope he's the best coach they've ever had. At the very least he does seem to have a much more commanding presence than Gulutzan did. All we can do is see what happens.

He sounds gruff and pissed off. Also way more knowledgeable than GG ever seemed to be.

I'm cautiously hopeful.
