Treliving is an excellent GM if you want a guy to make decisions based on what just happened.
Not a good GM if you are hoping for somebody that works well in predicting future outcomes and managing the team accordingly.
You win cups by predicting the future and managing outcomes accordingly, not based on what just happened.
Things change. In the NHL, they change quickly.

Conny has huge shoes to fill and I'm not the least bit surprised Treliving was snapped up by another team in a millisecond.

Oh ya ! What a GM ! Literally no success. Lost stars, terrible FA contracts. Questionable draft picks, terrible prospect development. And let’s not forget his crap coaching decisions. Conroy does have a lot of work to do. But Brad is not the 2nd coming of Christ bud. He was very average at best when you look at the 10 years. I also liked Brad as well, but it was more than time for a change.

One could almost say the Flames are the Leaves’ unofficial farm team, looking at the horrible trades the Leaves won, and a couple of the Flames’ better managers going their way.

Snapped up in an instant.
Contract with the Flames wasn't even officially expired.
Tells you all you need to know really.

I mean was he the worst GM ever no, but on the Flames end. It was time for a change. The Leafs can “snap” him up ! I really liked Brad and there was a lot of good. But the reality is, the rebuild he was a part of failed.

Where are all the dunces saying he would never get another GM job? I remember a solid handful. Show yourselves for your helping of crow!

I mean look at the list of experienced GMs available. The short list that was mentioned by the Toronto media was something like Treliving, Chiarelli, Bergevin, Botterill... the NHL recycles mediocre GMs endlessly.

Keep in mind his cap hit is already $11.6, so it's not like it's going to shatter their current cap structure ($13ml AAV would add $1.4m to their cap). This isn't like Colorado having their star go from $6.3mil to $12.6m.

You make it seem like he's the cream of the crop here. If that were the case would the Flames not at least have been a perennial contender (as was his number 1 goal when hired) when he was here?
I like the guy as a person and for his work ethic, but let's not pretend that he isn't partly responsible for the mess we have on our hands now. He's a good hire for the Leafs, but it's not like he wasn't a year or two past his expiry date in Calgary. If he hasn't learned from some of his mistakes on the coaching hire front and poor UFA management/tactics, this isn't going to end well in Toronto either.
Even Conroy alluded to the fact BT operates with some very dated philosophies and was a big fan of veteran lineups. This is not something that changes overnight and is a huge problem in today's NHL.

Matthews and his agent have to know that Draisaitl and McDavid contracts will eclipse his so I would aim higher than $13 million. This is his big payday and I'm not sure he will be happy making only $2 million more a season than a 32 year old John Tavares. He should be starting at a $15 million ask in hopes of settling somewhere near or above $14 million IMO.

Ahh yes, the old picks for that insurance 10th d-man at the eleventh hour Treliving special.
An annual tradition.
Enjoy it Toronto.

I really liked Tree as our GM. I just didn't like his coaching hires and his inability to make tough decisions ahead of time.
I was typing out this long paragraph about how he's probably learned a lesson from losing Gaudreau, but as I was typing it started to occur to me... what lesson would he learn from that?
It was a pretty unique situation. Johnny had one of his worst seasons the year before his final year. In spite of that, his team was probably trying to negotiate for "what he is/can/will be" rather than what he was that season. Tree, on the other hand, was probably trying to talk the numbers down a bit based on that season (maybe that's the lesson?). I remember something about Johnny not wanting to negotiate once the season started, too, so what was Brad supposed to do once the season started and Johnny's entire line took off for what was going to be career seasons for all three of them?
I guess his options with a guy who wasn't going to negotiate anything until after the season ended was to either go into the playoffs with him and risk losing him... or risk being the GM who traded a top-five player in the league (at the time) during a career season a month before the start of the playoffs, only to watch him win the Cup with someone else (remember, I said "risk this happening" not "that's what would have happened").
Like, even if you look at it from the perspective of "what's best for the team," we were one of the favourites to win the Cup that season. Is it best to try to win that Cup and maybe lose Johnny, or skewer your odds dramatically and hope it works out?

Pride and an overreaction to the Gaudreau heel turn really ####ed the decent to good body of work he did here.
Really screwed up the teams cap structure for years and likely will force them into a tear down.
Leaf fans should hope they dont suffer a similar fate when Tre goes on a signing binge after Matthews leaves.

That the NHL is managed via the Peter Principle?
GMs in the NHL get second, third and fourth chances to run franchises into the ground. Especially if they're well connected.

I know some people on here hate him, but I honestly wish him well. Always liked Tre and think he's a decent GM. Wish he'd have ended up on a team I like more, but still, all the best to him.

Toronto already has Wall as 1B, who is younger, cheaper and better, and they'll have Sammy as the 1A.
