Seems naive to me to think this doesn't go on constantly. And that's not a shot to anyone, it's just me being cynical I guess, haha. Probably one of the main reasons why "hockey guys" keep getting high profile jobs over outside candidates- connections with former teammates now working in executive positions for other teams, agents, scouts, etc.
I would also think that smart teams would have someone a step or two removed from the GM involved in these illicit negotiations/communications with the agent.

I'm thinking you keep Coleman & Backlund at C thus allowing you to move Lindholm back to RW. Setting up lines 2-4 as lines able to carry the heavy lifting would allow prime ice-time for the #1 line to really bury the puck. Would just need one more Winger and we'd have a seriously deep forward group.

What are you talking about... it's perfectly logical that employment contracts with numerous clauses typically valued in eight figures before the decimal point can be negotiated, finalized, approved, signed and delivered within mere minutes of eligibility.
That is to say that GM's have never been particularly opaque about their gentlemanly agreements about tampering.

I thought it was almost a certainty that he was going to sign in Dallas

Where it becomes problematic is when bad/avg teams sign these folks and hope they can play 'up' in the lineup. This is a terrific idea, if the player is still young enough where they are still in the upward trend of their growth trajectory. However, at 30 (think Coleman is around that age), he is what he is, and there should be an assumed downward trend baked in...
Given what Goodrow got out of NYR, the deal size is likely still greater for Coleman.
it's fun and exciting to hear about a good player coming here, however, at the same time, just feels like further wheel spinning at this point of the team building exercise from this org.

Coleman was just fine in NJ, further up the lineup. Another example might be Wheeler, who was solid down the lineup in Boston but really good up the lineup in Winnipeg.

Pfft what do Tampa beat writers know. They are the #1 opposition of the "It was in" movement.

Disagree.
I couldn't have been more clear as to where it came from.
Every reader has their own choice as to get excited or completely ignore it.
If I came out with "hearing Calgary has Coleman" and didn't show the source at all you'd have a point.

Fair enough, truth be told I know very little of the player outside of the cup runs.

It could have gone into the Trade Speculation thread since it wasn't a credible source.

really?
I dunno, I don't mind discussing of any rumour, including Eklund, etc.
It's fun as a fan to think of the 'what if.." scenarios, even if the probabilities are low/none.

I like Coleman the player, but he's a depth guy from a successful team. Signing those type of players to big deals is pretty much the anti-Championship method of roster management.
There's a reason why guys like Goodrow/Coleman get let go by the championship teams. You just can't afford to pay big salaries for support pieces. Tampa spent a 1st round pick to get Coleman at his low cap-hit for two years, and are now (apparently) refusing to pay him a bigger salary.
I'm not saying it would be bad, but it likely wouldn't be good.

I think Calgary has been identified as the place the Blake Colemans of the NHL can go and get massive contracts.

Rumour: [insert rumour]
Read the thread title before you click.
Unless discussing something really is a major problem for you. I can't say I minded having something to discuss and look into for a bit. Guess we'll see what happens.

25 v. 29 I suppose. Would you say the same about JT Miller?
Anyway, at most he's moving from a 3rd line role to a 2nd line role.

If it's not true, that is just fine as well. Getting Coleman would probably take us out of the running for anything else, and this team is more than a Coleman away IMO.

depends on the player of course. That being said 25 is still an age viewed as in/just entering a player's prime, especially for forwards, where as 29 is in/exiting the prime years... at least that is my view of it in the current nhl.
So is Coleman worth a 2nd liner contract over the next 5-6 years (assuming that's how much the flames would have to offer to get this type of deal done)?
