Kesler is the better player and more proven, but it isn't a huge downgrade by any means.
As far as whether the Canucks are a better team after this deal is a different story.

Ducks 266 Goals
Van 196 Goals
Gonna say it was a little easier to put up points with the Ducks

You trade a player like Kesler when it is time to change your team and aim for something different down the line. Whether it is better than its previous form depends on how that goes.
What the team got was cap space, more picks to either draft or make more moves with. That was the goal and the goal has been met while getting a player who can play for the team now (Bonino) and a player who could be something in two or three years (Sbisa).

He was your best player and you don't replace your best player with cap space and mid level prospects. What's the point of cap space if you are the Canucks? You think they will be better paying Niskanen $6+ million long term? July UFA is fools gold. I simply don't understand what the Canucks are trying to accomplish here as there's no UFA's out there that will change their plight which is slowly entering the top 5 of the NHL draft. They really needed to get at least one AAA prospect for Kesler and they didn't. That's major fail IMO as they not only got worse with the trade they didn't add a blue chip prospect for the future.

I feel bad for Bonino.
He is going to be hyped up to be Kesler's replacement and when he isn't able to do that the city will tear him apart.
Canucks have turned:
Schneider
Luongo
Kesler
into
9th overall (Horvat)
Markstrom
Matthias
Sbisa
Bonino
24th overall
Not terrible, but for a team in need of young impact players Horvat is really the only piece that you fully expect to develop into that type of player.

Which is why I said Kesler is still the better player.

Considering some Canuck fans were expecting Ryan Johansson for Kesler, of course some are disappointed.
But it's a decent deal though value wise. Better than what Feaster got for Bouwmeester.

Yeah. He's may be able to put up more PP points with the Sedins but he's likely not going to be able to live up to expectations.

I totally agree, the Canucks are just the Flames of a few years past, in every way...trading quality for quantity, hanging on to ageing stars (Sedins), creating cap room for nothing

Great hockey move for ANA
Second line center they needed
Are people really comparing POINTS? between Kesler and Bonino
Kesler is an all situation Center, who can play against top line players(Not far removed from a Selke)
Exactly the type of player you win with, and was the Canucks best player when they went to the finals.

This is not the best return for the Canucks but Kesler definitely limited their trade partners. Benning would be wise to stop handing out NTCs. Bonino is not bad and the other pieces may help us move up to #1 in the draft.
But the best news is that we are a worse team without Kesler. Since Vancouver can't compete with the best in the West anyways, it would be wise to tank for McDavid.

you said it isn't a huge downgrade and I totally disagree...Bonino was a decent player in really good situation. Kesler was on a team in shambles with a coach who was more worried about blocking shots than scoring goals.

if that was the goal why not trade him for prospects/better picks

These are the same people that will put Mat Stajan's PPG and say he is as good a player as ROR or Kesler (yes both have been said on here)

FWIW the Duck fans on their forum all love the deal tempered with a little remorse for losing Bones.

This deal is really dependent on what the Nucks do with 24th overall. I am not sold on Bonino. He's 26 and has only had one productive season. It remains to be seen if that's a blip or if he's trending up. Sbisa could be a decent #4 though.

I think this is a fair deal. The funny part is just what Canucks fans were expecting.
I also don't think much of Kesler. Anaheim fans will be disappointed if they expect much.

The Canuck are now pretty deep on the back end so Tanev deal looks quite possible now. Tanev, and the 2 firsts for 1 over all.

Top 4 guy? He was scratched basically the entire playoffs and even after they lost Robidas to a broken leg he only got in two games.
(Bryan Allen was playing over him)
