Everything I've read about this case indicates that the US wanted to send him back to Canada but The Harper Government (Vic Toews in particular) didn't want anything to do with it.

But the case became politically charged again this year — much to Washington’s consternation — as Canada’s Conservative government failed to act swiftly on Khadr’s application for transfer.
Toews was accused of deliberately stalling a decision on Khadr’s transfer request. Khadr’s lawyers made a federal court application alleging it was an “abuse of process.” The case was expected to proceed this week.
Senior Obama administration officials told the Star last week that Washington’s patience with Ottawa was wearing thin and the Khadr case was jeopardizing future relations between the countries, although it is not clear if this pressured Ottawa to ac

Unless US literally told Canada: "He's your problem, you must deal with him yourself!", I am with Harper on this one. If there was any way to keep him jailed in US, we should have left him there for life.
BTW, I wonder who paid for Khadr's army of lawyers? His family was supposedly dirt poor.

So which is it? First you said that "Canada literally fought to have him back", but now you're saying that you agree with The Harper Government's stance that our government didn't want him returned to Canada but only allowed his transfer because the US forced him on us.

IIRC, during his hearing a Guantanamo, he was represented by a military defense lawyer appointed by the US Navy. He has also received pro bono legal aid from Dennis Edney, a well-known human rights lawyer.

The perception in the press during case coverage was that Canada wants him back and US doesn't want to release him. The appearance was that Canada wants him back and is fighting for it with US. I acknowledge, this could have been a PR thing that our government used as an excuse not to bring him in. I was also aware of the Khadr's rights defense group that was vocally pressing Harper's government to bring him in. I was and still am against Harper's government yielding to the pressure from them (provided that US did not pressure them to do so as well, which would mean that they had no other choice but to bring him in).

Once again, you'll need to supply a citation to support your claim. I've been following this case rather closely, and everything I've read indicated that The Harper Government only reluctantly allowed Khadr back into Canada because it was part of his plea agreement with the US. At no point did I ever see a story that said the US wanted to hold him in Guantanamo for the full duration of his sentence but the Canadian government fought for his return.

I don't think the government wanted him back, but the American's foisted him on us through backdoor pressure.

I never got the impression from media coverage that Canada was fighting to get Khadr back (at least the Federal Government).

Meh, this means I'd have to Google the data to look for the article/-s that might have given me that impression. I am not that much interested. If you say you've been following the case rather closely and believe that Canada did it only under pressure, I'd take your word for it.

Even if his family is kept from him (from the news reports, they are a piece of work themselves), I'm pretty sure that he will be immediately 'in' with all the wrong people upon his release. I can't see this ending up positively for Canada., creating a celebrity.

He'll become a superstar for every radical out there without saying a word.
While I hope that if he does get out he's monitored for the rest of his life, I have no doubt that there will be fund raising in his name.
And yes his family is a piece of work, and its great that we paid the medical bills for one son who went over to the middle east and fought as a jihadist.

It's only a matter of time until he starts sponsored public speaking engagements.

Shocking that he could be released. Now is the time to take a tough stance and send a message to those out there thinking of following in his footsteps.

He is eligible for statutory release in 18months, and worst case his sentence is formally up in 2018. Not like your gonna keep him locked up much longer regardless.

Your entitled to your opinion. Unfortunately the courts (both US and Canadian) disagree.
