Thanks for the updates Troutman, you should be the only one posting in here as it has turned into a pissing match.

Troutman's the only source of actual information in this thread.

This thread is quite civil compared to #Coyotes on Twitter.

Arizona Free Enterprise Club considers ballot to block Coyotes' deal
http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/n...s.html?ana=twt
A conservative group opposed to Glendale’s $300 million arena management deal with Phoenix Coyotes’ suitor Greg Jamison is considering trying to take the issue to voters or could try to recall the four Glendale City Council members who approved the controversial agreement earlier this month.

Can you not separate being a fan from the idea that a city with a small tax base pouring money into a professional sports team that not many really care about is kind of ridiculous?

Why is that GWI lawyer dissing 'liberals' in those email exchanges? They don't come much more left-winged than me, but I am 100% against public finance of billionaire's businesses.
This whole business looks to me like a cornered mouse with several cats salivating as they slowly close in...
And time of my semi-annual thanking Troutman - Thanks Troutman...

It is ridiculous.. but it's the best option for the city. If Glendale had a time machine, they should've probably never built that arena. But there it is.

In retrospect it was unbelievably stupid, but Glendale wasn't the only entity that assumed that the go-go 90's would go on forever.
But BnA... what would the Coyotes have done without the new arena? I went to a few games at the AA and it was an embarrassment...

The Glendale public is paying for it no matter what. The only real question is whether the people end up paying less to operate an empty arena with no tenant or to pay someone to operate an NHL team there. I'm not going to argue which is the better option, except to think that if Goldwater's challenge works, the city will have to demonstrate the answer.

Where's the advantage to operating the hockey team when that's the option that costs more money?
Honestly, in all curiousity, what is the difference in costs between leaving that arena empty and the money they're putting into it now? I'd be curious to know how many local jobs would be lost and then determine a cost of each job.

They were essentially Portland bound at that point in time. Scottsdale didn't build at Los Arcos, so Gretz, et all went looking to Glendale who really were desperate to build Glendale Arena (Now Jobing.com) so Glendale really saved the team at that time.

According to the lease deal that was posted in this thread, the City of Glendale estimates that it will cost them in excess of $500 million over the next 20 years without a primary tenant in the arena. This deal will only cost about $350 million over 20 years.
The big question seems to be where the City got that half-billion figure from; is it accurate; and does it take into account the possibility of an AHL or other non-NHL franchise from occupying the building instead.

What are your thoughts of Jamison purchasing the arena in 5 years? If that happens, the arena management fee won't exist.
Spare me the "If he can't get his investors to get money to buy the team, how can he buy the arena?"

No (from what I can tell, they really don't account for alternative tenants).

Which oddly enough is apparently the norm with these studies as the other buildings they refer to use the same thinking. Seems like a pretty large hole.

Quite true....but then the other point that has to be made is that no other tenant will come even close to paying as much as an NHL club would...unless they get the Suns to move in or something like that.

That is actually a valid question. Why would it be "spared"?

And the Phoenix Coyote soap opera continues.. Let me guess in a month or so, Jamison will back out of this deal and NHL will be stuck operating that franchise again.
