I guess we will see. The Flames have another $10 m coming off of the cap next year, with an extension owed to Michael Backlund. In 2019 they will lose Mike Smith's salary and will need to re-sign Matthew Tkachuk. If needed there will likely be an opportunity to move Brouwer in the last year of his deal. In the end I don't think his contract is so cripplingly prohibitive like Milan Lucic's or Loui Eriksson's long-term, big dollar deals.

Sure, but a player that has been moving around as much as he has leads you to believe that he's simply not playing well enough to justify his salary anywhere he's been. If he doesn't find magic beans and turn his game around significantly, he might not even be playing in the NHL during the last year of his deal. I would be pleased with a 15 goal 30 point Brouwer if he were playing a much more intense brand of hockey with any sort of regularity.

Guys like him don't typically improve their skating/offensive abilities in their twilight years and these are already becoming a question mark.

Stajan is the one player I would be upset to lose. He is a good player, just overpaid.

Yeah Methot will have a ton of value league wide. Easy to see them shopping him

@CapFriendly
Methot has 2 yrs remaining on his deal at $4.9M cap hit. He also has a Modified NTC with 10-team no trade list if Vegas plans on trading him

Would anyone here have interest in a trade for Methot to the Flames?

CLARIFICATION: I believe some trades may be announced tonight if they're self-contained expansion draft related trades.

But it's my understanding flip deals involving external 3rd team - say VGK trading Methot or Emelin - are likely to wait until freeze lifts.

What is McPhee doing? Seriously. He could build a solid NHL roster in year one -- why is he making these (albeit rumoured) deals? Vegas only benefits from being competitive out of the gate. I don't get this at all. I hope when the real picks are made that reality sets in and real assets are exchanged.

He brought more value to the Flames than Brouwer did last year. At least he always shows compete and gets involved physically(even though it's never been his forte but he tries). In addition to being someone that can be ok on the defensive aspect of things now as his offence is dwindling. Besides, he can still make the pass.

He has adjusted his game to further his career.

I think Methot would be a great partner for Dougie Hamilton. Would allow Dougie to rove around and be creative offensively.

Because a "solid" NHL team won't win you the Stanley Cup, and likely won't even get you to the playoffs (look at the lack of good centres available).

He's building to win a cup, which means through the draft so he's snagging picks and young developing players wherever possible.

Giordano is a better partner.

The roster in year 1 wouldnt be the same roster in year 3. These guys in their primes will steadily decline and they will have no one to replace them. Guys like Tuch and Theodore (rumoured) would grow into those roles and keep them competitive in the long run.

Vegas isn't in win now mode. Sure they want to be entertaining but they are building from he ground up. Like any rebuilding team the assets they desire most are young NHLers, prospects and picks. Competing this year is secondary to getting younger assets. McPhee is making deals to get young players, prospects and picks as he should be while still taking some players for now.

What don't you understand about that?

I think they are more looking for a Brodie partner. And Methot shoots L. Would Treliving and GG consider getting Methot to play with Hamilton and moving Brodie back with Gio? Maybe, I guess. But they just spent all season getting Hamilton and Gio playing well together.

Yeah, this is really his only option to build a winner.

If you go with the competitive immediately route, you don't have any margin for error for injuries as you have basically no farm system. And then in a couple years if these younger players they draft all play well, they are going to start needing new contracts and you don't have the farm system to replace them on the cheap.

He basically has to build up the farm system immediately to have any chance at long term success.

McPhee obviously read the book "General Managing the Sutter Way", and is doing the opposite.

He's not just interested in today, he's interested in tomorrow.

Giordano is a better partner.
I was just thinking it would allow Methot to play the same role he does for Erik Karlsson. Also, would allow the Flames to pair up Gio and Brodie which has historically been a great pairing.
