I think we all know who the expert is when it comes to the "very real possibility" of the Flames picking 9th. For once, its not FDW...

  • Stars eliminated in the Western Conference final and Russell's game played condition is met.
  • Arizona signs Connor Bleackley.

Stars pick becomes 26th OA and Panthers pick becomes 55th OA.
Wouldn't the Stars pick 27th OA in the best case? The four conference finalists picking 27, 28, 29 and 30?

Panthers pick can now be 53, 54, or 55 with the Ducks eliminated.

53 if both Washington and Dallas are eliminated in the 2nd round
54 if one of Washington or Dallas is eliminated in the 2nd round
55 if both Washington and Dallas advance to the conference finals

If Arizona gets a compensatory pick for Bleackley, it will be 54, 55 or 56.

I haven't had enough coffee yet, but can someone explains how this works? I would have thought that Washington and Dallas winning more would push them down the draft order (i.e. to bigger numbers) and therefore push Florida up (to a smaller number). It seems backwards to me, but I assume I'm missing something.

The NHL doesn't do a good job explaining but

30th - Stanley Cup Winner
29th - Stanley Cup Finalist
28th/27th - Conference finalists
Remaining division leaders (if any) (reverse standings)
non-division leaders (reverse standings)
14th-4th non-playoff team, non-lottery winning teams (reverse standings)
3rd-1st - lottery winning teams

So for the Panthers pick the best case scenario now is:

30th - Non-Division winner Stanley Cup winner
29th - Non-Division winner Stanley Cup loser
28th - Non-Division winner Conference finalist
27th - Non-Division winner Conference finalist
26th - Washington
25th - Dallas
24th - Ducks
23rd - Panthers

For the Flames, we're hoping Dallas makes it to the conference finals though.

Thanks, great explanation

Oh, but what about strong teams getting really good prospects? In the cap era, teams will be forced to trade top prospects once they realize they can't afford them down the line. In the grand scheme of things, it will all even out.
Except, a three year ELC contract stops the cap from doing it's job efficiently.

Be much better to get rid of the draft completely and let teams offer contracts to the players directly without any preset ELCs. Then the salary cap would keep things fair. If Toronto wants to offer Mathews a 9 million dollar contract then great, go for it.

Getting a Finn is the best possible outcome but there's a lot of meat on the bone regardless where the Flames end up. And this years draft kind of leaves you with the feeling that 8 teams are going to have the biggest variances in their lists. You might end up getting someone who sitting at 4 all the way down in 8th.

Only thing I am looking forward to is having the mystery removed as to where the Flames pick.

Even if we dropped down to 7th I wouldn't be surprised if a few teams "reach" for a defenseman. Could still get Dubois or Tkachuk at #7.

I personally have a bad feeling about Nylander. Small skilled forward with a famous name.

Reverse of that statement is "very real possibility we finish 1st".

Both are unlikely.

What? No, it's just reverse standings for the 4-14 picks.

So if Russell plays in game 2, the 50% games played in the first two rounds of the playoffs condition will be met?
