So you've forgotten even the most significant portions of the pop culture you were exposed to as a child? I'm thinking the answer is no...and if I'm wrong, I can assure you that you're a rare exception, and certainly not the rule.

My uncle had a really cool looking eagle in his chest he got when he was in the navy in ww2, it looked completly stupid on a 60 year old with his sagging skin and the fading ink but at least he got it honestly as a sailor and so had a story it was attached to, you guys will just look like 50 year olds rocking mc hammer harem pants.

So the theory is the guy with the cartoon turtles on his arm put them there to look "hard". Fair enough
What culture is he aping? The teenage culture? The mutant culture? The ninja culture? The turtle culture?
Oh yeah, and trying to "look hard" and "look rich" are pretty much equal on the old "I'm an @sshole" scale.

Good to know, pops. I'll be sure to run any further purchases and decisions past you first to make sure I won't regret them when I'm fifty (well past halfway there, BTW, but feel free to continue to talk to me as if I were 13.)
I have a ski-themed tattoo too, should I have not have got that one in case people forget about snow sports with global warming?
They both mean something to me, and I couldn't care less if people think they're cool, or even know what they are. Glad you could trot out your stance against tattoos in a 'display your tattoo' thread. Be sure to mock cars in the vehicle thread, call everybody in the motorcycle thread 'organ donors', and cut down the Flames in the FOI while you're on a roll.

Also, WTF is this supposed to even mean? Nobody making above minimum wage has a tattoo? That's a laugh.

I was seriously going to get a Flames tattoo when I was in Bucerias Mexico last week but kinda chickened out. Plus I didn't know exactly what to get. I seen a few that I like but I want something a little different.

Check around a few shops in Calgary. There's some great artists in this city. Tell them you want the logo, but want something a little different. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to sketch something out for you. Get a few artist's interpretations and see what you like. (Also, if you get it done locally you can go back for touch-ups, etc.)

All tattoos by Mike Peace at Strangeworld Tattoos in the NW. I recommend all of the artists at the shop, its a really cool chill clean place to get tattooed without all the ######baggery elitism that some shops have.

Sorry to necro-quote this old stuff, but I never read the details, just admired your TMNT tatts. Funny enough, the guy I was talking about in my post a few above yours being the Team Captain of Team Tattoed Against Cancer last year who is my buddy actually is Mike Peace. I wanted Mike to do my bike chain/ribbon tattoo, but his brother Steve (Immaculate Concept) did it. Not that I'm complaining, Steve does awesome work and I've known them both for about 15 years. 50's pin-up girls are one of Steve's specialties and he does an amazing job.
Anyway, Mike's a super nice guy too. Neither of us is doing the ride this year, for different reasons, but we're supporting and Mike's still organizing his team.
Brought this up again just because I came back upon this thread and noticed the discussion about Mike and his work that I missed before. So another +1 1 for Mike Peace here (although I haven't actually had a tattoo from him)

Always bugs me when I see women who have no money, a couple of kids living off the government, complain they have no cash to take care of their family posting on facebook their new tattoos.

Not really, tatoos on bald paunchy 50 year old guys look stupid, and every (and I mean every) bald paunchy 50 year old I play soccer with, and most over 40 as well, regret the hell out of tatoos that looked cool when they were young and slim and had a head of hair, at 50 a tat looks as stupid on a 50 year old as wearing an Ed Hardy shirt.
Would you want to wear the same t shirt for 30 years or have the same Farah Fawcett poster on your wall?

Obviously people have already said in this thread that their tattoos mean something to them and they don't regret them. Instead of being a dick and keep pushing your own agenda just leave and keep the thread about tattoos.
Just because you play soccer with a bunch of old people who regret their tattoos doesn't mean everyone does, but since your obviously biased in the topic you can't see the other side.

This was the original posters question
I am some vague notions about getting some ink...
I've always been a bit of a philistine when it comes to tattoos, I always feel like no matter what I'd get it would be something I would want to change.
What made you get the tattoo(s) you have?
Any advice for someone looking to get their first?
I think that most old guys I know to some degree or another regret their tats is suitable advice, apparently the regret rate for tats is at just under 20%, essentially it grows as you get older.

do you have a referance for this?
tbh, I am surprised by you views. I have been to england.....that is a country that loves it's tats.
I have one and am gonna get another, both repesent something to me.....really don't give a rat's a$$ if anyone else "gets" them or understands/likes them.

Anyone else surprised to see Fotze defending tattoos so much? I gotta say I didn't see that one coming.

We english are great at drunken stupidity, and I think the point is not if anyone else likes or gets them, but will you in 30 years time.
Incidently I am not for or against tats, I just have this conversation with every kid I work with that wants East Van or their name in gothic script tattood across their back at 17.
At 50 I am painfully aware of the frailty of my body and how different my outlook on life is then it was even at 40, as I have said I am around probably more older guys who have tats than most and see how few of those guys still like or want them, and these are regimental tats and the like that have a sight more meaning than most.
A tattoo is more permanant than a wife, anyone thinking of having one needs to think far more about the reasons not too than whether they should, I would also caution anyone thinking of a tat to look at their dad or grandad and try and picture it on them, as that is what you will look like in 30 years.
