My MILs coworker and her family were at one of the hotels that burned down. They were at the beach with nothing but their keys (thank god) and ran to the car with no belongings but what they had at the beach when they saw the fire raging towards the hotel.

No wallets no passports and no clothes. I haven't heard an update since yesterday but they were sleeping in their car. Family of 4 with an 8 and 10 year old. Absolutely devastating.

Will post an update when I hear what's happening with them

That destroyed building map is staggering.... Looks like the "modern" commercial district (the Safeway, Cannery Mall, Walgreens) survived.

Of note, the little strip to the west of this survived, containing the Old Lahaina Luau, Star Noodle, and Honu Oceanside.

If winds are going at like 30 kmph, I think fires can move about 70-80% as fast as those speeds across prairie grass. I think I read the hurricane winds on occasion were as fast as 100 kmph in some parts of Maui? That could be fast enough that they couldn't react in time.

Lahaina was just a very cool place. I always stayed nearby in Kanaapali but it was close enough where on my morning run I'd make it into the town. I feel like the population there had a lot of older folks so evacuation was bound to be super hard. I expect they will be digging bodies out of homes for quite a while.

Curious to see the timeline and what the original fire was. Building codes will probably need to be adjusted for the new (if there is a new). Definitely some learnings.

and Lahaina/Kaanapali was the more moist area compared to the more Desert like Kihei (IIRC).

Absolutely heartbreaking. It’s actually hard to believe that the fire could have moved so quickly that people couldn’t get away from it. Terrifying.

According to this, for wildfires, the rule of thumb is 10% of wind speed. I believe this includes things like trees, so it's not like pure prairie grass. So if there were speeds up to 100 kmph, it spread at speeds of approximately 10 kmph. That's about the speed that the average person jogs, but instead it is the speed of consumption of fuel. Crazy.

I don't think you need to change building codes. I think you just need to change rules where you build natural fire breaks between the future town and the landscape.

I had a layover in Maui a few months ago. I rented an ebike to try and see as much of the area as I could in a short amount of time. I ended up getting 2 flat tires south of Lahaina from those silly thorn bushes that are everywhere there.

In 35 degree heat, and a solid 3 hr walk away from my hotel with a flat tired ebike, I wasn't sure what I was going to do.

Some local with a tiny Ford Focus ended up seeing me on the side of the highway, we somehow loaded up the giant bike into the back of his car and he drove me back to the rental shop. Really nice guy, missing most of his teeth, but just wanted to help.

I hope ol Gilbert is okay.

The loss of life is terrible, and I suspect the number will increase. But also such a huge loss of history, culture and art, that waterfront area was full of galleries, historical sites, old buildings and museums.

Believe it! And always remember stuff like this. It can overcome you so quickly, it needs to be taken seriously well before it’s a problem. Ugh this whole event is so sad.
