You don't sign guy who have a career high of 8 goals and 12 points to play 3rd line LW.

Rooney had decent speed in the games I watched, but he was signed to play on the 4th line. Bumping him to the 3rd line to sabotage another line so you can sign Cody Eakin is the issue. Just a stupid move, its like when they signed Grossman when he didn't belong on the roster.

If you are going to waste a contract, maybe do it on a guy who provides us something we are missing?

I actually like Rooney's camp so far, but that's me. I liked him on the defensive side of things, in the faceoff dot, and on the PK. I thought he did a lot better job back-checking than guys like Milano, and Phillips. That's just my eye test though.

Can Rooney be a Barclay Goodrow type of player and fit with Backlund and Coleman? That’s probably what they’re going for again. They tried that with Pitlick last year but it didn’t work out.

It might not look great but Sutter also dominated the 2012 playoffs with guys like Lewis and King in his top 9 and Nolan, Richardson, and Fraser on his 4th line so who knows. Just work hard, kill penalties, be defensively responsible and hope for the best I guess.

Not a fan of the signing or the player, just recognize why they signed him. Since becoming an NHL regular he's been a +7 player in three seasons. I think that is what they liked and why they grabbed him. I would have preferred a number of our prospects over him, but this is the NHL and a Sutter team. Sutter prefers proven players.

That was 10 years ago, scoring is up, the type of players playing on those bottom lines are different now as well. They need to score goals to be effective, 6-8 goals playing 3rd line minutes isn't going to cut it.

I really like Rooney's game. I would not be surprised to see him get 10 goals on the third line while being an excellent defensive forward.

He’s pretty far above 140 pounds; it’s probably why they signed him.

I don’t like how Sutter handled this.
We don't have a glaring hole at left wing or centre. That's the problem. Pelletier and Milano are left shooting left wingers and Ruzicka is a centre. Phillips is a right shooter but see all the arguments above.

What often happens in these situations is the player gets suspended from the team while they are away. Sounds cold, but it does happen and it allows the team to save cap space.

I’m not sure Phillips would have made the team.

But you could at least given him a game with some of the actual NHL talent over these next three preseason games, he’s earned that much at least.

Didn't Kylington get waived last year?

Sutters comments.

Basically says some guys sent down out performed guys left in camp but because of contracts they get sent down. Not sure how that is a good message to send when Treliving said the exact opposite.

Funny part is Sutter’s most successful seasons have come with young players on the roster.

03-04 Flames: Kobasew, Saprykin, Lombardi were all under 22, Regehr and Leopold were under 23

11-12 Kings: Doughty, Voynov, Clifford, Nolan, and King all started the season 22 and younger

13-14 Kings: Toffoli, Pearson, and Muzzin were all in their first or second full NHL season and added to the other young guys.

Sutter almost seems to have a blind spot to how he’s had most of his success. As of right now this teams youngest full time player is likely to be Dube is who 24 years old, no reason a guy like a Pelletier, Schwindt, Phillips, Gawdin (last year), etc didn’t deserve a longer look over guys like Eakin, Milano, or Ritchie.

Not even about making the team, just give them some ice time with the NHL squad.

Well, he clearly meant waiver exempt guys. He named Zary and Schwindt, I imagine Klapka might be in there too.

Sutter went to Manchester to watch the team and pick out some AHL players during the all Star break to bring up to the team. I think Nolan and King being two of the key bottom roster guys.
