I'm trying to remember the name of the 4th line scrub that turned and burned Brodie in a foot race during the playoffs a couple of years ago.

you are hours away from UFA. Only makes sense for him and all UFAs to wait and see what is out there. Can always circle back

that was one of the two options I put in bold. He stated them both as if there was a third option. Honestly, it's getting old seeing every media person do this like their followers don't understand they are the only options.

I think that’s the issue - I think he’s wanting more. This is his last chance for a sizeable payday unless he goes short term. He’s probably asking for 6M. Now, if he doesn’t get offers like that on day one, maybe Treliving has another shot, but not if Treliving fills the spot with, say, Barrie.

I disagree. I think this is less about the money and more about the expansion draft. If Brodie wanted to stay and take less money to stay he for sure won't do this without a guarantee that he gets protected in the expansion draft. I bet he wanted a NMC for some of all of the contract.

I’m sure that an NMC was in there too. But I am not sure that’s a Flames impediment, as long as it didn’t too long past the draft. I think the Flames will expose Gio.

Meh...I'm still hoping that Calgary will get Hall.
There's enough improving youth that Calgary is a much better team minus Brodie but plus Hall is a better team. I'm under the belief that Andersson will be able to step into Brodie's role shortly, and signing Brodie long term is not the right move for the Flames.
I always thought Brodie was solid and a great guy. He could skate. However, I also always found him to be a complimentary player. He's not especially physical, and his offence has been slipping lately.
Brodie is likely to get a big and long term contract on the FA market. Whoever signs that is making a bit of a mistake.

It’s unfortunate that we have not been able to get the deal done but I hope that we are able to get one done with Brodie in free agency. Would suck to lose him.

Looks like a big opportunity for Rasmus Andersson. Could be the Flames 1D this season

I have a pretty strong feeling this is exactly what the problem is.
Right after we tried to trade Brodie he put Toronto on his no trade list.
I can’t see why he would want to sign here if come next offseason he is left exposed and Seattle snags him.
I don’t blame Tre for not wanting to give it to him as they probably feel obligated to protect Gio out of respect (if we signed a high end player like Pietrangelo this would obviously change) and Hanifin and Andersson are too valuable to leave exposed.

I want Brodie back, but I agree with the guys on the radio, rather bring Gus back than sign Barrie. Probably half the cap hit and gives you that PP1 player.

If Brodie walks, and they sign Barrie for anything within $1 mil/season in AAV, that is a monumental fail.

It is a smart move to let the market decide the price on him. I wouldn't mind seeing him back, but you can't overpay him and this year isn't a great year to be a free agent IMO.

I am sad to hear this - Brodie has many elite attributes that the Flames will miss, and he has the ability to help the team play an up-tempo quick transition system with his shot and his skating. Really makes this team faster. Plus he is solid defensively, especially against the elite speed skilled players. I think he will be missed.

Agreed. Offense and goaltending is much more of a priority over UFA defesemen. Calgary got good crop of young defesemen to work with, and are still growing.

The didn't let him walk. They haven't reached a deal yet. Doesn't mean it won't happen. It either gets harder because Brodie now has other offers to field, or it gets easier because Brodie learns what his options are and gets back to working out his Flames deal.
I'm sure there's a let him walk number, but no way they sent him packing just because he reached UFA.

Don't get attached to aging players if there are young guys ready to replace him, like Rasmus.
