Then they don't have the hometown boy to trot out at the NHL awards, they don't have the howntown boy to call the guys just drafted to sell Vegas as a home, explain to the guys and WAGs where the best neighborhoods to live are, schools to send their kids to... and then they have to take the risk that he doesn't sign.
I agree that taking a guy who has poor on ice value pending UFA over the waiver eligibles speaks poorly to the waiver eligibles but I don't think for a second that if Derek Engellends home was in Scranton or Mississauga that they'd take him over one of them.

Be ready to hit the floor.
What has the kid done to even be considered for a claim?
If anything he has proved the scouts who didn't see him as a top 10 pick in the draft correct. 4 seasons have been played since he was drafted and things looked solid for him heading into last years camp. He disappointed then, disappointed in his cup of coffee last year and by all accounts had a thought year in the A. His camp thus far has been mediocre at best.
I feel like Poirier would be a more likely claim but I think all 3 Flames clear

From what I have been reading, it sounded like Porier was playing better than Foo. I wonder if they are going to try Bennett, Foo and Veersteg next game

I think Foo is sent down before next game.
Klimchuk was better than Foo or Poirier

Yeah, none of these guys will get claimed.
Surprised Gazdic was also not on waivers. Maybe since he's a veteran they are showing him some more respect and will wait until later to waive him. Or they plan on using him as the #14 forward giving him an occasional game.
Poirier has to prove himself in the AHL again before he gets another shot. Wasn't impressed by him last night.
I've given up on Shinkaruk. Not skilled enough for the top 6 and he doesn't fit on the bottom 6. I think he could do well in the KHL.
Wotherspoon is a solid defenseman in the AHL, but his game is just meh in the NHL. Probably will not be qualified next season.
I know some are disappointed that Bartowski is not waived, but having him as the #7 guy instead of Kulak and Andersson would make the most sense.

all three are expected to have important roles on the AHL roster Camp is up coming. Not a surprise they want them down there and want them ready.
Not likely to be claimed.
Who will be the 1C with jankowski on big club roster?

Sure, but my fear would be that Gulutzan thinks he's the #6 guy (who plays... poorly... more often then not) rather then the #7 guy.

Hope we see more cuts. Time to get down to the roster, or at least close to it, so the guys have more time to gel. Don't want a repeat of last year's camp

In regards to Engelland.
George McPhee was on hockey central earlier today and was asked about who is emerging as the "face of the franchise" type of player. He said he didn't want anything like that necessarily and that the logo would serve that purpose for now. He then elaborated that he wanted more of a leadership group to emerge and said that has happened. He specifically mentioned Engelland, Fleury, and Perron as those guys. Engelland is going to play a big role on that club this year, no question about it. That doesn't mean he will be playing 20 minutes a night etc, just that the dressing room is his and a couple other vets. He has also been doing a ton of stuff in the community as a team rep.
The one other thing McPhee said is that he is starting to return calls from other GM's in regards to moving one of the plethora of Dmen they still have in camp. So he will be making a deal, but it most certainly wont be Engelland.
I wonder if Treliving is eyeing one of the Vegas guys to fill that 6 role?

I can't believe the vitriol towards Wotherspoon, even if he never makes the jump to the NHL he's a top 2 in the AHL and gives all of our developing propects stability, professionalism, and an increased chance at success in Stockton. I could understand if Wotherspoon wanted out to be given an opportunity somewhere else, but I think he still holds value for the Flames organization. Similarly, Shinkaruk will be a veteran in Stockton and expected to carry some of the offensive load, as far as keeping a young AND competitive farm team, Hunter still has value.

Guys, this doesn't mean they'll be sent down for sure. Now is probably just the best time to put them through. The team has 30 days or 10 games (or something like that) before they have to put them back on waivers to send them down.

He put up some meh numbers on a pathetic team with minutes way above what he'd get here. I don't miss Granlund at all, and you can bet the second the Canucks pull themselves out of the toilet he won't have a place with them either.

Sounds like what a lot of short-sighted impatient Flames fans said about Backlund at the same point in his career. I get why Treliving did the trade but I think it's becoming quite clear who is likely to have the better NHL career between Granlund and Shinkaruk. Too bad we couldn't figure out a way to fit him in.

Granlund is an NHLer but he'll always have the same pros and cons. On the bright side he's skilled and very smart. On the down side he's got average size, below average strength and doesn't have much jam to his game. I think on a good team he gets pushed out of the top two lines and looks like a strange fit further down the lineup. On a bad team he's a legit 2nd liner.
I don't think Granlund was ever going to be a core player here. I think the Flames saw him as a guy who wasn't an ideal 3rd liner and wasn't going to be good enough to hold down a top two line role. I think their assessment is correct. He looks a lot better on a thin VAN lineup than he would have here. The trade worked out well for him and VAN, too bad Shinkaruk has failed to progress since joining the Flames. Guess he'll probably have one last season to prove himself in Stockton and try and win a callup

Shinkaruk hasn't been able to take the next step to this point. So be it.
That does not make Granlund any better of a hockey player. There is no spot on the Flames roster for Granlund, so who cares?

Yeah, but Vegas had an exclusive negotiating window to talk to every unprotected UFA before the expansion draft.
They could have easily made a deal to sign Engelland after free agency opened if they really wanted to get one of the unprotected young Flames players.
Engellend signed for $1 million. There obviously wasn't heavy interest there.

He signed later that night. No other team had a chance to talk to him.
I agree he wouldn't have been the guy to watch on July 1st, but they clearly wanted the guy and didn't want to wait for the window in case Calgary signed him.
