The US doesn't have one system for liquor retailing. Each state has its own rules and regulations where some are very similiar to most Canadian provinces where everything is sold in government run stores. Conversly, in Quebec you can buy your beer or wine at the grocery store.

Next time your in the US seek out some of the microbrews. New Belgium brewing out of Fort Collins, CO makes some great beers and they are kind of a semi-national distributor now. Fat Tire is their original and I like it.
