As for the Oilers being the oldest team in the league, and the only team over 30...

Going on a long playoff run is exhausting. Going on back-to-back long playoff runs is beyond exhausting and extremely difficult. Trying to do it as the oldest team in the NHL is, well, a bold strategy to say the least.

Also, it is usually the case that goalies lift the average (most goalies are older, and contenders especially, tend to have older goalies). But in this case, the goalies actually bring down their average!

Yes, they have McDavid and Draisaitl. But they are going into a cup or bust season with suspect goaltending, a horrific D core, the oldest team in the league, having gotten smaller, slower, and significantly less physical.

THAT'S the plan!

In: 2nd round pick, 2x 3rd round picks, 2 bozos who will barely see ice time, cap space to sign more forwards.

Out: former 8th overall, former 14th overall, #4 defenceman, 3rd round pick

Masterclass alright, Bowman’s brain must be as smooth as a bowling ball.

Don't forget, the plan also involves assuming that players that found their footing and had career years will do it again. Because everyone knows that once you play for the oilers, every personal best is your new floor, and everyone who played beneath their best will have a bounceback year this year.

I mean, maybe Skinner has found his way and is going to be a bonafide vezina candidate year after year. Every goalie that has an outstanding stretch of play never ever falls off and is like that forever right? cough Binnington cough cough Lack cough Schneider

That has the looks of a historically bad D core in Edmonton. Something will have to give as you are not competing for the Cup with a bunch of #6s and Darnell Nurse rounding out your bottom two pairings.

I like the effort that Stetcher plays with, but he reminds me of Kris Russel all the passion in the world can't match up again athleticism and genetics.

The end result here is probably the best case scenario for the Oilers. As a cap crunched team, with potentially big signings next year, there was no way they could match.

But, the best case scenario is still absolutely terrible for them. And 100% their own making.

Teams should not let other teams get away with incompetence.

Yeah. And to top it off I think its important to also remember, the play the wonder-twins 25+ minutes per night for another 82 games plus playoffs and those kids aren't getting any younger either.

"Its not the year...its the mileage"

And thats a lot of mileage.

Plus...is Skinner really that good? Can he play that level consistently?

Personally I think the Oilers shot their shot. The rest is just posturing.

Any early guesses as to what defencemen will be available for the oilers to acquire? Either at the TDL or early in the season? Assuming they put Kane on LTIR of course.

Of course the problem the oilers have is they have little to nothing left to trade. The picks they acquired from St. Louis wouldn’t be enough to get a bonafide top four defenceman. They traded their 2025 first round pick for the last pick in the first round of the 2024 draft. They could of course trade their 1st round pick in 2026 but that would be when they start falling after Draisaitl leaves (if the fall doesn’t come this year)… so that could be a very costly pick to trade.

Trying to figure out what motivation there would be to stay?

Prospect pool has been blown apart. They just lost two young players for a hill of beans.

Oldest team in the league.

Getting more difficult to hold the band together as is, before the raises.

"Please sign with us for 8 years" (as a contending team for maybe one more year).

If im either of those guys I am starting to pack the house

If I were the GM of the Oilers I would be gunning for Askorov. It would give hope for the future and make a pretty strong argument for why the two Oilers players should stay.

Even with Broberg back it was ugly. Capped out with a guy who may or may not live up to his draft pedigree.

The Ceci trade is the baffling one, they got San Jose to toss in a waiver wire claim and now this guy is going to be in their top 4 with 30 NHL games to his name and Oiler fans posting he is elite LOL.

Also reading Ceci was on for 0 goals against on the PK in the playoffs and 8 in the regular season.

Really bizarre stuff. Have one of the best PK in the NHL and blow it up.
