Do you see the Flames carrying 8 d-men this season? I think the questions surrounds who sits and who gets waived. I still doubt that Gudbranson gets sent down right away. Which means you are waiving one of Valimaki/Kylington/Stone or carrying 8 d-men. I agree that the 3rd pairing will likely be a rotation of 3 guys(to start).

Stone will be sent down, and called up if when Zadorov or Gudbranson are hurt and require replacement.

I still can't believe we signed Gudbranson for $2m a year and not a PTO and a potential league minimum contract. Truly crazy stuff.

Was just going to echo the ridiculousness of that Gudbranson signing.
A few PTOs would've been so much better. I'm always for competition for depth positions over handing out these salaries before seeing what a guy is willing to bring to the table for you.
And chances are we didn't even need him to begin with. It's just redundant after bringing in Zadorov.

I also want to echo that I think Gudbranson isn't very good.

That's a no brainer. I don't think anyone is off limits.
The only asset that'd I'd fight to keep is the 2023 1st round pick.
I think the best young players and assets deal the Flames can offer is Mangiapane, Valimaki, Coronato, 2022 1st round pick and if Treliving hasn't already offered that, he's over valued his own players AGAIN.
I'd be really disappointed if I found out later that the Flames didn't land Eichel because Treliving didn't want to trade any of the roster players.

Probably not, but possible. But the only way they can is if they only have 13 forwards, which would mean no one (Duehr, Gawdin, Pospicil, etc) cracks the lineup. Which is of course a possibility.
Assuming they run with 7, I doubt they will be too concerned about waivers for whichever player they decide is #8 on that list.
On a side note, a lot of people seem to think they wouldn't send Gudbranson down, just because he is getting paid more. I don't think that is true - if they feel the other guys are better, they won't hesitate to send him down. And if anyone claimed him (unlikely), it would do the Flames a favour and free up some cap space.
Valimaki and Kylington are more valuable than Stone and Gudbranson, simply because of their age and thus their upside. So I doubt the Flames expose either of them, unless they are essentially giving up on them.
That's how I see it, anyway.

He did look better last game by all reports.
People are way to quick to scrutinize.
It’s preseason.
I think Valimaki and Kylington are both in store for a strong season.

He's had good moves and speed for years. The brass just didn't let him loose long enough to see if it would go anywhere. One bad game (yes some bonehead plays) and he's sitting. I want to see him succeed.

I’m of a similar opinion about everything. The only place where we differ is that I doubt they won’t hesitate in regards to Gudbrsnson. Also, if one of Kylington/Valimaki ends up as #8, though unlikely, it could backfire on the organization.

I don't think players like pre season, so my guess would be the NHLPA is advocating for their players so they don't have to slog through a bunch of games they might get injured during.

Valimaki was elite in his former leagues.
He made JP look like a bust by comparison in Finland.
It's a much harder position to play. I have faith that he'll come around and become the player we know he can be. The ability is there. I think he just forced it last season.
Look how long Hanifin has been at it, and he's just starting to come into his own now. There's time for Valimaki.

I think the Gudbranson signing is genius. Instant whipping boy for the fans to take the fans heat off of some other players. Also there to light a fire under other players. "Crap, this guy is making enough to indicate he's got a spot. I really have to step it up to earn my position".

Yeah, maybe.
But for me, he hasn't used his skill set when he has been given the chance - he's just kind of 'there'. So when he makes a bad play, it's back to the rafters because there hasn't been any good plays.
He needs to start utilizing his talent.

Yeah I agree... Was it the Avs series where he was one of the better players for the Flames? Or was that Dallas? In any case, he's shown he can compete in the NHL - unfortunately injuries likely stalled his development a bit.

The PA just doing its best to prevent teams "overworking" players. They also limit how long on ice practices can be and make sure players get mandated days off in the regular season.

Fans go out of their way to see the good in some players and the bad in others
They have played 3 of 8 preseason games...way too early to judge
Reading CP you would think Kylington scored a double hatty last game or something. He is playing pretty good but a decent preseason game against an expansion team doesn't cement him in the top four.
I am even willing to give Gudbranson and Zadorov more than one or two preseason games
