Puzzling move by Philly. Why not just move him out for picks to a team that needs to hit the floor rather than taking on Umberger? Or an expiring contract?
Would anyone have taken on his deal for pics?

5 years is a long time for a guy like Hartnall.

Meat and potatoes kind of guy.

Even if Philly gives up a player with 2 year extra on the contract, I can't help but to think they would have rather another guy with a lower caphit to help them as well in the mean time.

Then again, they'd just burn it all on somebody else.

Hextall told Hartnell he was no longer in the Flyer's plans

Randy Miller ‏@RandyJMiller now
Hartnell was angry when Hextall told him he wasn’t in plans a few days ago. He decided yesterday to accept deal from #Flyers to Columbus.

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 10s
Hartnell said he was angry when he got a call from Flyers 5 days ago that "basically I was done there" in Phila.

Randy Miller ‏@RandyJMiller 1m
Hartnell on waiving no-trade clause to leave #Flyers “I think (Hextall) decided it was best for me to move on."

Interesting move, especially after seeing the tweets above. Works for me as I think the Flyers are a poorer team after this deal. Hartnell worked his ass off.

Also worth noting that Hextall traded a now pissed-off Hartnell within the division, to a team that could conceivably push the Flyers down the ladder, or even out of the post-season entirely.

JUNE 23, 2011 - The Philadelphia Flyers trade Mike Richards and Jeff Carter to separate teams, in spite of the fact that both had recently signed long-term contract extensions with Philly.

JUNE 23, 2012 - The Philadelphia Flyers trade James Van Riemsdyk to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Luke Schenn, despite the fact that JVR recently signed a long-term contract extension with Philly.

JUNE 23, 2014 - The Philadelphia Flyers trade Scott Hartnell to Columbus for RJ Umberger, despite the fact that Hartnell recently signed a long-term contract extension with Philly.

...

So if you've got term in Philadelphia, make sure that your GM cannot find his phone on June 23.

Awful trade for Philly. Hartnell had a frustratingly slow start this year but really picked it up after the trade deadline.

I just think Hartnell hopes he will end up in L.A. by the trade deadline. $5 he's there by the end of 2016

The Flyers are in rebuilding mode?

I like it.
Huh? I'm pretty sure Umberger has played many times more games at center in the NHL than Hartnell has. If anything this gives the Flyers more center depth to make a trade.

Hextall making a splash already huh? Shows he means business. Alternatively it could also come back to bite him in the ass.

Don't understand this deal. I'll take Hartnell over Umberger any day of the week.

You'd have to think this had more to do with the remaining term on each contract than anything else....

I can't see the logic otherwise..!?
