Vincent Lecavalier is likely the next #1 centremen target for Jay Feaster.
I hope that's a joke because that's just crazy. Why would he target the player whose contract he resigned his last job over? The Richards situation is different because he was a UFA, so it wouldn't have cost the team anything other than money. No way he trades picks or young players for aging vets. Only way he trades picks is if it's like a ROR situation where we're getting a young star player back. God I hope so anyway.
Flames GM Jay Feaster isn’t shopping Jarome Iginla, but he’s held talks with more than one team to see what he could get. If they do move Iginla, they won’t hit a home-run in a deal.
That's a pretty odd attitude. Giving up on this team? Where have you been for the last 3+ years VFF? It's over man, the window is long gone.
If he asks for a trade or accepts a trade if asked from the team, to me, that's giving up.
I truly don't know how I'm going to feel if/when he gets dealt, but my loyalty principles that are ingrained tell me i'm going to be pretty pissed off and pissed off AT Iginla.
I'm a loyalty first guy, I want nothing to do with him leaving and I'm personally not looking forward to thinking Iginla is a traitor for leaving Calgary. That's how my mind works and ill be pretty pissed off if he gives up on this team.
I'm sorry but what the hell is there to give up on? This team has failed over and over again for 24 years. Only one season since then making it pass the first round of the playoffs. Iginla has done everything for us and has made us very compeditive but those days are gone.
Can you honestly say this is a cup winning team we have constructed? Honestly? I'm sorry but we are not. One man is not above a team. The Calgary Flames, as a franchise at this point in time are not benefiting with having him or Kipper on the roster. Don't get me wrong, i love them both and appreciate everything they have given us but it is time to move on.
I don't necessarily agree with this, Iginla still had some great years in him and I think his loyalty and sense of responsibility to the organization kept him here until now. But with the contract finishing up and the state of the team where it is...I highly doubt just settling in and being comfortable is on his mind. He's one of the best players of his generation, he wants to win.
As far as disrupting his family goes, the guy is one of the most well paid athletes in his sport, he's not going to have an issue flying back and forth, moving or keeping his family where necessary, or even returning to Calgary in the offseasons or retiring here in a few years if he chooses to. For someone with his wealth I just don't see geography being a huge deal as far as his family goes, especially if its only short term. The opportunity to win the cup is fleeting but the long term security of his family is guaranteed right now. I don't see that as a big of a factor as some do.
That being said, if you are right and Iginla chooses to re-sign in Calgary and finish his career here, I really hope the fans don't backlash against him. He's earned the right to determine his own future.
I don't dissagree with anything you wrote, and Iginla certainly has earned the right to determine what he wants moving forward with hopefully no backlash. But, if Iginla remains a Flame, I believe it means exactly what you wrote, a cup is no longer his top priority, because no one in their right mind (and I believe Iggy is in his right mind) and believe that a cup is in the near term future of this organization the way things are.
Which puts Calgary in an interesting dilema. They would now be operating with a captain and franchise player, who's top priority isn't winning. Not a recipe for success and will breed contempt and a country club atmospher around here for as long as he's here. How do the Flames manage that issue? I honestly have no idea.
If Iginla really likes Calgary, why not trade him at the deadline and re-sign him in the off-season?
The Flames get assets and Iginla is back in Calgary.
Or does that somehow spoil Jarome Iginla's legacy as the Calgary Flame.
I think this would be the ideal option. I would think that we would have to give up a conditional pick though as teams would assume this is the route that Iginla and the Flames would pursue.
Iginla + a conditional pick (where the team Iginla goes to gets the pick if he does not sign with them in the offseason)
If he asks for a trade or accepts a trade if asked from the team, to me, that's giving up.
I truly don't know how I'm going to feel if/when he gets dealt, but my loyalty principles that are ingrained tell me i'm going to be pretty pissed off and pissed off AT Iginla.
Just the way I feel.
Well hopefully there's not many that think like you. It's ownership's fault his career didn't have a win, not his. Direct your anger at the right people.
I can't believe how much this topic is debated. Just trade him, everyone knows its the smart move. How long did it take for all of T.O to forget about Sundin after he was gone. I think Jerome's importance to this franchise is a little exaggerated. Will he be missed...yes. Will the team be better for it and get behind its new leadership core? yes. The longer Flames management waits the worse they make it....just do it. This goes for Kipper as well.

Francis being a mouthpiece for an Agent trying to play brinkmanship. Wow, stop the presses.
I still would bet the farm he won't walk for nothing. No way after all this he does that to the Flames. I mean he's had say on signing players to help him, and basically given a blank cheque for compensation.
For him to walk for nothing would either be him telling the Flames trade me, and the fingers are in the ears, or Iggy goes from class to trash overnight.
Some chance on the former, no chance on the later.

Oh, I'm not saying my line of thinking is productive or very rationale, I'm just very stubborn when it comes to this kind of stuff.
I just don't think he's wired for that type of requirement of a Stanley Cup, by any means possible, to validate his career.
He's talked about the respect he had for Sakic and Yzerman staying with the same team thier whole career, I assume Doan will be part of that conversation too. Sure, it helps that Yzerman and Sakic both won multiple cups, but Yzerman wasn't far from being a Senator in the mid 90's, and Sakic did sign an offer sheet with the Rags, but both never came to fruiation, just like Iginla to Buffalo for Peca never happened either in 2001-ish. And Iginla got as razor thin close as you could for getting his Cup.
Plus, there's no guarantee that he wins a cup if he goes anywhere else anyways, and I think that is as big of a deterrent for him then anything; him having seen this happen before with other players, going through the drama of leaving your only NHL team, all for not getting that Cup, and having not only having disappointment for your rented team not winning, but the fact that you went through all the hoops of leaving your old city, which you really didn't want to, for nothing. Even winning a Cup (although in playoffs wars, you become part of a close knit team for those 2 months), its not "your" team which cheapens the experience is some way, or can for some.
Just my opinion, and I can see why he'd want to leave given the state of the franchise right now. The possibility of trading him now to get some pieces, sign back here in the summer (ala Doug Weight was planning to do all along when he got moved at the deadline) also exists, but not sure if he wants to put the Flames or the other organization through that charade if his heart really is here.
I really don't think, IMO, he's hell bent on getting a Stanley Cup somehow some way if it means moving to a new city and playing as a hired rental player for 3 months.

It already has gotten worse...this should have been done years ago... I think we can all agree the Flames would look a lot better moving forward with Schenn, Simmonds and Bernier, for example.

I don't know how you can say that with any certainty.

If you care about the Flames getting back to the playoffs and competing sooner as opposed to later, Iginla needs to go at the deadline.
Watching Iggy score regular season goals as this team slides sideways doesn't feel as near as good as this:
Playoff sucess is where it's at for a fan. It's not even about finishing 8th, how far have our standards fallen. It's been years since I've felt the Flames were legit (Maybe after game 6 vs. San Jose in 2008 was actually the last time).
Iginla has twice been a difficult signing and Meehan knows how to leverage a team. I can foresee a situation where Iginla refuses to waive his no-trade clause and then starts wanting to negotiate a contract after the trade deadline.
He will put the Flames in a position where if they don't pay him what he wants, they will lose him for nothing which would be a major PR nightmare.

I doubt Iginla gets traded and I see him re-signing with Calgary. Iginla will only leave if he wants to and he wants to win in Calgary. It's up to Feaster to make some moves, outside of moving Jarome, to make this team better now and for the future.
