Which is kind of bizarre because Bure and Mogilny played together for CCCP, along with Fedorov.

Huska, who is working day in and day out with Poirier on molding his game and becoming that hard-working player the Calgary organization embodies, immediately offers reasons why Poirier's inclusion makes sense.

"He's one of those guys that tends to find the areas where the pucks are going to be, and he puts himself in a good position to shoot. He's got a great shot when he does let it go," Huska said. "He's a deceiving skater. I would bet most defensemen in our conference know who he is and when he's on the ice because they have to be on their toes when he's out there because he skates very, very well."

“He’s got an NHL shot today. He has a tremendous shot, a tremendous release,” said Flames GM Brad Treliving. “And he can skate at the NHL level. The funny thing with Emile, if you watch him skate, it’s not an oil painting. Maybe ‘unorthodox’ is the right word. But he wins races. He gets to places fast. He beats people with his feet. He’s explosive. He’s got an explosive stride.

“Those are great assets for him.”

In fact, with talented teen David Pastrnak since summoned by the Boston Bruins, Poirier — at 20 years, one month and 12 days — will be the youngest participant in Monday’s all-star game.

“That speaks volumes for the kid — not only that he got the recognition, but doing it with no training camp and with a less-than-perfect start,” Treliving said. “He’s been able to establish himself very quickly in the AHL as a very good player and at a very young age and without some of the experiences in his belt in September, whether it be a rookie camp or a training camp or pre-season games or any of that. When he started playing games, he just jumped right in.

“It’s a feather in his cap. To be recognized as an all-star in that league — a tremendous league — at his age shows that he’s made an impact and he’s caught people’s attention.”

And there’s no doubt his combination of speed and snarl appeals to the brass at the Saddledome.

So what’s the hold-up?

Perhaps a better question is, what’s the rush?

“He’s learning the game away from the puck. He’s learning to become more responsible in his own end. He’s learning the defensive details. Those things have taken, I think, a big step forward since the start of the year,” Treliving said. “I really like his offensive instincts. He knows where to go on the offensive side. He plays with pace, and there’s some edge to him. He’s a determined player and he’s not shy about going into contested areas. He’ll go to places that are uncomfortable to score, and he has some bite to him.

“We don’t want to mute any of his offence, but it’s incorporating that defensive conscience and learning to make sure he’s conscious on both sides of the puck. That takes time. That’s just maturation. That’s just playing what I call a ‘pro game’ and graduating your game to a pro game.

“It’s nothing alarming. To me, that’s just part of the development process.”

Others have noticed his commitment to honing his two-way game.

“He’s always been talented and he can score goals and be good offensively, but it’s the defensive side of his game that is really improving a lot,” Ortio said.

“Everybody knows about his speed he has and his offensive ability — in particular, his shooting ability — but what we’ve seen over the first two-thirds of our season or getting close to that is he’s now learning how to do things professionally in terms of managing the puck better on the ice,” added Adirondack Flames head coach Ryan Huska. “He doesn’t turn the puck over nearly as much, and I think he has a much better understanding of the style he has to play to have success here and eventually, hopefully, at the next level for him.

“He’s a guy who’s interested and willing to learn,” Huska continued. “We’ve worked with him in certain areas of his game — in particular, mostly the habits and details — and now seeing him make some changes and adjustments, I think it says a lot about him and his willingness to try to get better and eventually try to get himself up to Calgary.

“That’s our objective is to make sure that whenever his time does come, that he’s going to be ready for it and he’s going to be able to contribute in a positive way.”

Well, the logical pick at the time was Hunter. People likely thought he was trying to be smarter than the others (wasn't he just reading off the list Button gave him?) but hindsight is 20/20

How so?

You take who you think is the best player available. If you think that's Poirier, you take Poirier. If you think it's Shinkaruk, you take Shinkaruk.

Clearly, they thought Poirier was the logical pick.

Based off of scouting, IIRC Poirier was projected to be a later 1st to early 2nd at the time of the draft. Obviously Button's list thought different and looks better in retrospect, but to a lot of people Feaster was 'going off the board'.

Other peoples' scouting. The Flames had their list and stuck to it.

based on the fact that Shinkaruk fell as far as he did, they were not the only ones with reservations.

The only difference between the Flames and the other teams drafting between 10th and 24th is that Shinkaruk is from Calgary. That's the only reason the Flames (and no one else) are challenged for the pick.

There is no board...The media uses lists provided by CSS and ISS and everyone on the internet takes it as gospel. It is a safe assumption to say most if not all 30 NHL teams lists are all different.
