The asphalt has never been removed. If you look at a satellite image of the airport today you can still make out the old runways. They are completely broken up with grass growing through but still there.

I guess I wasn't looking close enough when I did all my flying there back in the day. Or I did and just forgot about it!

Yes, and was named Mount Royal after the Montreal Neighborhood. Many of the street names come from Montreal.
