Kinda dumb.

Well that's another interesting angle to consider too..
He wasn't under an NHL contract. Do the rules still apply? Would the NHL suspend a guy like Aydar Suniev for the same incident for example?

Put me in the camp that I don't think it should be against the rules to bet on games outside of your own sport. If an NHL player bet on his own team, he should be banned for life. If he bet on a team in the NHL outside of his team, there should be an extremely severe penalty (years and years of suspension as it ruins the integrity of the game and players could collude). But if Pinto bet on the Lakers/Nuggets game last night, IMO that has no impact on the NHL. It's as if a random fan bet on games.

I wonder if the alleged incident occurred when the player was subject to an NHL contract.

This is a joke of a suspension though. Unless Pinto plans on paying in another sports league, why does it matter if he wants to bet on a football or basketball game?

According Dailyfaceoff there was a connection between Pinto and a 3rd party bettor. So if I am interpeting this right, someone bet on NHL games that was/is connected to Pinto:

Sources told Daily Faceoff that the league’s investigation centered around a sweep of gambling partners that revealed a Pinto connection to a third-party bettor.

OK, that helps clarify things. If he's facilitating betting on NHL games for someone close to him, that's pretty bad.

How is it hypocritical when players can influence games and we can't?

Slippery slope to betting on games he plays in and he probably got made an example of because of his contract situation.
it is no different than my employment contract. I can't personally trade futures or options related to the grain complex and not just the ones I trade for my current role.

Yes and yes.
You have Davis Sanchez giving out player props and parlays every NFL game on TSN. It's the same as the NHL or maybe even more focused. Rogers doesn't have as much in game promoting with Jays games, but they still have commercials and show live betting odds on updates of other games. I'm not sure about NBA..Will find out this week, but I'm sure they will to.
I do partake in the habit so this doesn't bother me the way it does others. But I'm a horribly out of touch Gen X who with antiquated social views. I will say that trying to make money at this is very hard and requires a lot of work. If you don't do the work, long term you'll lose.

Given the wording, I wonder if Pinto was a beard for a pro bettor.

NHL players CAN bet on other sports. This is a very strange story, in that the NHL found no evidence that he bet on NHL games but handed down a massive suspension.
https://ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/...ing-suspension
Quote:
“This is important because it goes to the integrity of the game,” a league source told this newspaper Thursday. “It’s the appearance of impropriety. That’s the problem. You can’t have that as a league."
“Once you start to tarnish the system, especially with your new partners in the gambling world, it’s not good. You’ve kicked the wrong hornet’s nest. The appearance of the integrity of games? Woah.”
So what did Pinto do?
League sources say Pinto’s online gambling account in the United States was flagged by a company that is a partner of the league because of unusual activity and it contacted the NHL’s head office recently. Since then, the league has been conducting a thorough investigation and clearly they found something was untoward or Bettman wouldn’t have come down so hard in his ruling.
The collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA clearly states that gambling “on any NHL game is prohibited” and club employees are subject to the same rules. Under the terms of the CBA, Bettman has the right to impose discipline on any player for conduct that’s “detrimental to the game of hockey.”

I wonder if they look at their officials track records on this as hard as players? Sometimes I wonder...
