It's something I've felt as well. We've all heard the "build down the middle"..."build from the net out"..."defense wins championships"...

The most popular "what are the flames doing wrong" conclusion is we don't have enough top talent, so we have to tank for a few years to get it.

Personally I feel we concentrate too much on Defence and not enough on offence up front and we undervalue 2nd - 4th round picks, spending them on "depth".
Most of the playoff teams have a common theme, which is at least two elite forwards with some teams having more

Boston - Pastrnak, Marchand, Bergeron
Toronto - Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander
Tampa - Kucherov, Point, Stamkos
Florida - Tkachuk, Barkov
Rangers - Panarin, Zibanajed
Devils - Hughes, Hischier, Bratt
Edmonton - McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent Hopkins (this year)
LA - Fiala, Kopitar
Colorado - MacKinnon, Rantanen
Dallas - Robertson, Pavelski, Benn

You need offensive game breakers. The NHL is a 4-3 league, finding the offensive game breakers over time has to be the goal. Vegas and Carolina are arguably the only elite teams that do not have at least one if not a couple superstars capable of approaching 100 points on their roster.

The idea that you build out from the backend is a little antiquated for today’s NHL. Ideally you would have one stud back there, but having a solid 3 pairings is nowhere near as important as having those game breakers up front.

Agree on not valuing picks overall. Would much prefer an approach where they try to hit offensive home runs in the 2nd-4th rounds rather than trading them away.

IMO you need to build around goaltending and top 6 forwards to have sustained success in a league where the goals scored/game is rising year over year. I'm so over the past few decades of Flames putting so much resources into bluelines that look good on paper but underwhelm on the ice.

I believe Don was still with the Coyotes and hired her brother

"I don’t want to be the GM,” said Meghan Chayka with a laugh. “I want to own the team. I want to be my boss. I want to build a billion-dollar company and own the team.”

That's the same lady providing us with those awesome stat cards breaking down things into detail.

I would be on board with someone like that and if she was willing to come here.

Pretty much describes what Maloney was saying unless he was just feeding us BS.

A young innovative mind that thinks differently.
