He's basically using the Oilers, and of course they'll bend over and take it.

Can the Oilers even sign Bear now?

I am sure the other deal was probably 2 year $6m. So in theory his time not in Edmonton for the extra year is worth $2m.

Seravelli shamelessly doing PR spin work for the Oilers for future considerations.

He likely did turn down more money, likely Vancouver. I've heard he didn't want to go back home. Also his preference before going to TO was actually Edmonton.

Definitely wish BT signed this contract if he was looking for a dman, great deal for the Oilers.

I'm guessing the offer he turned down was 6 million for years

Oilers have 1.3 in space if I’m adding right. They still have to sign Bear and a goalie.

Turns down 6 million a year to play for Edmonton for 4... Dumbest guy in the league?

As someone who lives in Toronto I can reassure you you’re wrong.

Barrie is good on the PP and a liability in any other situation. I thought he was a bad fit for the Leafs when they dealt for him but I had no idea he’d be as bad as he was.

Brodie has his bad moments but at least he provides solid defence most of the time. Barrie doesn’t even try to play defence.

I think putting Klefbom on LTIR momentarily gives them more cap space. Not sure how much though

It makes plenty of sense. Barrie's bread and butter is the PP. The Oilers have no PP QB, so he will play 4 minutes a night on the PP with McDavid and Draisaitl. Then next off-season he will go to market and cash in when there is more economic certainty. Barrie could legitimately be a 65-70 point player in Edmonton and sign a 5x7-8m contract next "summer" when the purse string loosen.

They also don't know how long he'll be out for. If he comes back mid season and they've used his money to sign someone else, they are boned

Not good. Like that PP needed help.

Take Klefbom off the team and look at that roster. Unless they’re hoping their power play clicks at 50% over a whole season and winning all their games 6-5 they’re not going anywhere.

it was probably 1x6 from a team that isn't as good of a fit for him, while in Edmonton he could potentially hit 70 points playing on that PP and easily get 7-8m over 5-6 years on his next deal

Makes sense for Barrie. He didn’t have the best time in Toronto, so he wanted to sign in a place where he could rebuild his value. A one year deal playing with McDavid and Draisaitl should do exactly that.

I’m glad we went with Tanev over Barrie though.

Yup my guess exactly. Any higher offer was probably from a team with a coach that preaches defensive responsibility. Not going to get his big payday in the future playing on a team like that

Yeah this is so painfully obvious what Barrie is doing. Half a year with a compressed schedule playing on the number one PP and padding his stats. He's hoping to bloat his offensive numbers enough to spring board into a huge pay day 8 months from now.

Won't even have to buy a place in that crap hole and will spend at least half the time on the road anyways.

Hell, he might even get dealt to a contender at the trade dead line.
