This is true in my experience as well.

Remember that businesses 'pass on costs?' Guess what?

It still blows my mind that when the economy is dying in the gutter the Government is still finding a way to take more and more.

She needs to "man up" and answer the Nenshi question about what policy changes she wants to see.

How are they doing that? They didn't raise the rate this year.

You sexist bastard.

That being said, maybe there needs to be a 'skill-testing question' applied?

Like I think Rempel is out to lunch on the sexist stuff, and Nenshi is snarky and condescending.

But in terms of being correct, Nenshi is 100% in the right, and Rempel is playing it as political theatre.

You try hiring snow shovellers and golf course workers at $25-$30 bucks an hour + benefits and see if you don't have to mandate a raise to your income. Its expensive to run a city!

I don't know what I'm going to pay yet, but my assessment dropped - which is appropriate for the state of the economy.

However, the fact of it is that city council did not raise the tax rate. Earlier in the thread there's an explanation of how property tax works and I can re-explain that for you if needed.

I completely agree.

But if she was being an idiot and was wrong and Nenshi was being snarky and condescending, sometimes thats the only way to get to people.

And she threw the 'sexism' card in his face which, hilariously ironically, is sexist as all hell.

Idiotic comment by Nenshi. Rempel would've looked much better had she not tried to add the sexism label, talk about thin skinned.

A lot of cities in the U.S. do that. Canadians would go ballistic, though.

About 10 years ago someone floated the idea of charging out-of-towners more for using Calgary transit. Airdrie, Okotoks, etc. residents had a complete melt-down. They feel entitled to subsidized Calgary services even though they don't pay property tax here.

Airdrie, Okotoks, and Cochrane are the definition of parasite communities. I didn't really follow stuff like that back then as I was pretty young. Why did we care if they have a melt-down back then? What are they going to do? Stop coming into work and play in Calgary? Let them cry. If they don't like it, they can always just move to Calgary and start paying into our tax base. That may require them living in a house that actually fits their income level though.

If you don't own property and therefore don't pay city taxes directly, are you a parasite?

Which one?

Property taxes went up, according to most people about 15%. Now that isnt all Civic, theres a fairly hefty Provincial portion in there.

Now, did they go up or not?

How is that moving goalposts?

If you rent property, you are paying property tax indirectly, unless your landlord is a magical unicorn that eats that cost for you.

If you had told me that an MP and a Mayor of a city in Canada got into a pissing match on twitter, i'd have bet a lot of money it was Nenshi.

I'm glad Rempel raised the issue for her constituents. And i'm glad that she asked for a meeting and called out Nenshi for responding via Twitter.

The law they need to amend is the Municipal Government Act. That law can only be amended by the provincial government.

Oddly enough, Nenshi has been asking to have it changed but the provincial government has not moved yet. I think they want specific acts for Calgary and Edmonton.
