found a video of gulutzan talking about his coaching philosophy at what looks like a saskatchewan coaching conference (babcock, desjardins, tippett all there). it's pretty long but it's got some good stuff in there. goes a bit into his vision for a defensive system. seems very knowledgeable and intelligent and believes in development first and foremost (a refreshing difference from hartley). can totally see bt vibing with this.
e: at around 16:40 or so, he talks specifically about the differences b/w hartley's system (when defending the rush) and the canucks'. talks about hartley's system as a good start, and the ways you can progress from it.

Posted this in the coach rumor thread - Glen Gulutzan's last two NHL general managers were Joe Nieuwendyk and Jim Benning.
Draw your own conclusions - personally, I think that might play a role.
Excellent repost. Perhaps your third version will get your facts straight. Glen Gulutzan's last two GM's were actually Jim Benning & Mike Gillis. If you want to name the last 3 then you can add Nieuwendyk.
But feel free to pat yourself on the back for being incorrect again. Great stuff.
I have faith in Trelivings process and that he likely did a whole lot of research, interviews etc and had made a good decision for where he wants to see the team go and what type of gane he wants the team to play.
Im firmly on board until given a reason not to be.
Glen Gulutzan to be hired as Flames new head coach as early as Thursday

Screw this hiring if the news is true.
For those that think Treliving can do no wrong. Well this is far from being the best HC. Nope this is "no good".
We all have to remember that, at the heart of this rant, Stay Golden is still bitter about the Hartley firing... I'm not sure anybody would have made him happy, unless we brought back Bob!
Personally, I'm still waiting for something official - or Sureloss of course - and while my preferred hiring was Reirdon, I trust BT and his team.

I don't understand. Is Gillis supposed to be seen as an improvement over Nieuwendyk?
I mean, that's worse, if anything. I...

Boy you're going to look real silly if Gulutzan succeeds here...

I would argue Gillis is the best GM in Canuck history, the results speak for themselves. The biggest failing the team had while he was in charge was at the draft, I'm not sure how much responsibility he should bear for that.

Burke was the best GM in Canucks history. Who else could have pulled off his trickery at the 99 Draft?
Gillis did get the Nucks to within 1 win of the Cup, which is very impressive, and yeah, probably puts him ahead of Nieuwy. But still...
He hired Tortorella
He traded Schneider AND Luongo essentially for Bo Horvat and Markstrom
He signed ridiculous deals, including a 12-year deal to Lu
Most of the core Canucks of the 2011 were Nonis' pieces, not his

It's not that he's bad because of the Canucks so much as it seems unlikely that he learned much useful while working under Tortorella and Desjardins (who were both out-coached by the guy we just fired). Reirden having learned from Trotz, for example, would inspire more confidence.
Check the resume of the guy who just won the Stanley Cup: 2 medicore seasons as Boston's head coach, followed by 6 years as Tortorella's assistant with three different teams.

Did he fail or succeed getting a pretty decent DAL roster into the playoffs in the 2 seasons he was there NO. In fact the hockey pundits were unanimous DAL should have made the playoffs. Enter a new HC.
Did the Canucks make the payoffs this season NO.
Where are the Canucks picking this draft again.
Does Gulutzan NHL coaching career really impress anyone if so I would love to know why.
Treliving better pray Johnny, Monahan, Gio and Brodie play out of their minds bailing his butt out. And then there is the Goalie. He will be taking a hail Mary shot on Bishop or, or...
Are these the same pundits that predict the inevitable rise of the Edmonton Oilers for the last 1/2 decade?
Excellent job Cherry picking GG's record as an Assistant Coach as well. No credit for helping them make the playoffs in 2015?
Please... more nuggets of useless, baseless, unsourced insight. Stay Golden.

Ignore Stay Golden on anything related to Treliving though. He's usually a reasonable poster, but there seems to be something personal there. I'm genuinely curious what it is, but I doubt we'll ever get an answer.
Reirden would be a smart hire.
Gulutzan is not. And yes I am not a fan of Treliving when it comes to the Hartley firing.
As a deal maker concerning trades Treliving is the right man. He has made mostly trades favorable to the Flames benefit. I have no problem giving you an answer on Treliving. The Hartley firing really #$/% me off so there it is I lost respect for him on that aspect. Hartley should have been given this year. Treliving signed 3 goalies not Hartley. That messed up the first 2 months Treliving is as much to blame. Instead he used Hartley as a scape goat
Instead of being a man and admitting to himself he signed 3 goalies because he was sure he could move Hiller or Ramo.
Let's be honest here most everyone in the hockey world thought Hiller was going to be moved.
Hartley now had to manage Brad's gaff.
So what happened at the end of the year Hartley pays for Treliving's own screw up.
On Gulutzan It is not the right hire and it makes me angry that Hartley was fired and could possibly be replaced with this.
I'm OK with Gulutzan being named the coach, I'm more interested in who's going to be his assistants. Hopefully some other bright young minds so that the whole org can really build upon youth and grow together.
PS really funny to hear both sides be extreme in their reasoning for liking or hating. Hilarious.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
Rave reviews from Torts. Said "Glen will be a star coach in this league" Nice video.
Warming up to Glen a bit if this is for real.
Seems better on the offensive end of things. Would be great to complement him with defensive minded associate coach. Reirden as Associate HC perhaps as has already been suggested? Need a powerplay guru like Reirden to round out the coaching staff.
Not a big fan of this hire but Treliving sees something in him and he knows what the club needs more than I do. It does feel awfully similar to first time GM Button hiring Hay which I also wasn't a fan of. Time will tell but since Terry Crisp this organization has been pretty abysmal when it comes to finding the right coach. Hopefully he's more on the level of Darryl Sutter than the guys hired since then.
Maybe Treliving is hiring both Gulutzen AND Rierden. Throwing that out there because you just never know. Plus if I'm right then I'm a CP hero. I thought I read earlier that BT wants to hire the assistant too.

I like that he has had previous head coaching experience, failed, went back to an assistant coach and allowed himself to learn from his mistakes.
I think this could be a good hire; will have to give it time to make my judgement call on it.
Now go get a goalie BT.
