First of all, Canada is tolerant of protest, these other countries aren't. So in the old analogy, its easy to be a tough guy when your enemy is going to hit you with a pillow.
Second, ahem, puts on tinfoil hat. Some of these environmental groups get funding from middle eastern oil companies to go after their competitors like the Alberta Oilsands.
Looks up and see's a UFO.

'I received the harshest sentence for sex outside marriage, harshest sentence for drinking alcohol and on top of that I was found guilty of perjury,’ the woman told Verdens Gang.
In fact, this is a victory for all of those men's rights advocates out there. Apparently, the court in Dubai found that she did engage in sexual contact but that the sexual assault complaint was not credible. In short, she "was THAT girl". Based on the posts in this thread, at least some of you should be celebrating this, no?

I had no quotes in there, and certainly did not side with the debate, buy don't you think the credibility of the UAE courts diminish this point you're making?

Hopefully she can get back home sooner rather than later.

I am far from an authority on Islam/Muslim etc So how is that the Qur'an promises 72 virgins to men when Non marital sex for women is punishable by death by stoning ???
Hypocritical i would say.
I watched a program on i think it was on Discovery featuring Dubai and the explosion of Western living within and how under the UAE they do follow Saudi Practices under Sharia Law but they sort of ignore it to feed the opulence and Global tourism of Dubai, however the punishments for breaking their many laws are severe even to those from the Western world, Europe etc.
They basically have divisions within the police that are more like thugs hired by the Saudi goverment that post fake internet hook ups for Hetero and Homosexual sex.
They were saying how if it is a same sex target The person is beaten, interrogated jailed and it is not uncommon a sentence of death.
And this notion that Muslims can't be gay is absolute not true it is just that they live in extreme fear of being caught. The Saudi police see it as a epidemic that they deal with harshly.
Even surfing sex sites of any kind on the internet can result in jail, no joke.
They tend to turn their head to non Saudi men looking to have sex with no Saudi women but if you are looking for a Muslim women that is ill advised.
In the case of this women that the OP is about. See below.

Problems sometimes arise when an unmarried or divorced woman becomes pregnant as a result of a rape. Some Sharia courts do not recognize DNA testing or the evaluation of possible paternity by other blood tests. The case often results in a "she-said, he said" situation. Sometimes, the alleged rapist is found not-guilty because his involvement cannot be proven. But if an unmarried woman becomes pregnant, she can be assumed to be guilty of extra-marital sexual activity and can be executed. If she claims that she was raped and is unable to prove her case, then she will probably receive severe punishment, because she would be assumed guilty of making a false accusation.

seriously wtf

The way women are treated in the Middle East is tragic, period. I will say though, that Dubai is a beautiful city. Many women there feel liberated because they can dress in pants and not have to cover their bodies with the lovely grey/black/white burqa wear that is expected of them. I spoke to a woman there who jogged in the mornings in shorts and she told me that men stared at her because she showed skin and they found it alarming. I asked her if she was afraid and she said that she goes in groups of three or more at all times, only in daylight in morning hours and only in open areas. (Must be very relaxing )
Women are looked upon as less than human. I wouldn't walk in Dubai by myself EVER, but then again there are areas in the city I live that I wouldn't visit by myself or with other people- at any time of day.
