Where the hell are these cops hanging out....Bearspaw? All you have to do is put this device on pretty much any corner of 17th Ave in the Beltline after 6pm and and you'll be able to snag at least 5 motorbikes every 20 minutes. This should be the easiest assignment on the force.

While they are plenty indeed, you actually have to look around and pay attention to catch those people. With noise snare, you can pretty much close your eyes and take a nap, and still catch offenders.

All a moot point I guess, since none of them seem to be a priority. The real dangerous criminals are the people doing 55km's/hour on Airport Trail.

Well those are dangerous and I have no issues with a person going 50km/h in a playground zone at 8:32 a.m. getting a steep fine.

0 Tickets? Not long until this experiment gets the axe as if it's not bringing in money it's not protecting citizens.

Then there's the people on my commute at 7:15 who drive 25 km/h through the playground zone. There are no children on the playground at that time, the playground zone is not in affect and the playground has a 6 ft high fence between it and the roard. I think you're probably ok.

Is it though? Many jurisdictions in Canada don't have playground zones and the 50km/h limit in place. Don't have time to dig deeper, but apparently there have been studies done showing that the 20km/h difference doesn't really change anything.

I don't remember seeing one playground zone in my entire time in the US. Come to think of it I dont really remember seeing one outside of Alberta. I may just be having a senile moment, but if they were so safe, you'd think every other place would jump on it.

They are enforcing distracted driving - it just doesn't seem to be having an effect.

Calgary police wrote 4,688 tickets for distracted driving between Oct. 1, 2011, and July 31, 2012.

About 900 of those were handed out during the first month.

The rate has risen steadily in each subsequent month.

They are put in place for psychological effect. Everyone knows that no kids are found in playgrounds any more, at least not without being under the supervision of a paranoid adult.

Every morning the kids in the school across from our place, I see women leading these young toddlers who are tied up to one another like a prison chain gang leading them veeerrryyy sloooowllly down a sidewalk, while every one is silent. I used to walk to school, about 4 blocks, alone in Grade 1 and with my younger brother from Grade 2 onwards. Then, after school, we'd let ourselves in the house (nobody home 'till 5), then run back outside and around the field/playground, completely unsupervised. Now I walk past the playground in Sunalta near my place on the way home every day, and I have never - NEVER - seen a kid in there playing.

PS: Nothing bad ever happened to me despite my parents' neglect, and I made $5 every Friday from this nice old man who wanted me to pet his ferret. Weird thing was, he kept it in his pocket.

I let me kids run free all summer. We back onto a green space with a path, and my kids run with 5 others, it's like a pack of dogs.

I agree that there is too much over parenting. You have to give you kids situations where they can make their own decisions and grow.

I remember listening to the CBC and they had a fella on that looked into the occurances of child abductions in the good old days (50's) compared to now. There was no significant difference in the number. The difference was in the media.

The amount of bikes with straight pipes that you can hear from 3 blocks away is getting out of control again here in the Beltline now that nice weather is here. I can live with it in the daytime (because hey, inner city = noise), but when its at 1am, and it's every 15-20 minutes it feels a little ridiculous.

I want to set up one of those clothesline traps on my street; when buddy decides to take his noisemaking machine down the street at 3 AM, I could just press a button and have him decapitated by the razor wire that would spring up at neck height.

That seems both a measured and reasonable approach to the problem. Who will miss these d-bags? My guess would be: no one.
