For you Sci Fiction fans, here's an old chestnut in its entirety, and a series that was cancelled when it should have been given more time

It's pretty sad that one season made in the olden days is about as long as some full series released over 5-6 years in the current streaming era.

I actually re-watched it not long ago, it holds up really well actually.
Sure, some of the effects aren't 'top-notch' but the characters and the stories sure are.
Thats a well that could be gone back to for a re-boot or sequel.

The effects were top knotch for its day.
I would also argue that if I was to do a list of Science fiction ship designs, that the Hammerhead would absolutely be in it.
James Morrison was the best part of the series acting wise.

That show was amazing, especially for it's time. The CGI for the time was really good, but moreso than that, the characters, the stories, it was all really good!

Gotta be late 2000s-early 2010s. Mad Men, Breaking Bad and (pre season 5) Game of Thrones running concurrently. Not sure any other five or so year period could beat that triumvirate.
For a 10-year period, 2002-2012. Thrones was just getting started but add Sopranos and The Wire, that is a decade of excellence.

Ballard (Prime Video) was pretty good if you like that universe. I enjoyed Bosche and Bosche Legacy.

I think there needs to be a differentiation between regular cable & paid service (HBO) especially in the late 90's early 2000's

Bosch was great
A few episodes in and Ballard has been pretty good, definitely looking forward to the rest

Very late to the party but I started True Detective. I finished Season 1, Season 2, and I'm 1.5 episodes into Season 3.
In summary, Season 2, is not good. Most of the reception that season got states the same thing. And it's not like a tiny bit bad. It's a significant shift in what the show was about in Season 1. Like the tone, atmosphere, dialogue delivery....everything was just so different.
Season 1 was incredible. I really got hooked on the story and the characters and how they managed their own internal demons and how it played a role in the overall detective/investigation part of the story. The acting was really great and the story flowed very well.
Season 2 shifts everything. To me, the "detective/investigation" part seemed to be put on the backburner in favour of....I don't know....a story about corruption? Story aside, the one thing that stood out was the dialogue. It was just so weird at times. Like they were trying to mix some old-time Hollywood film dialogue into a modern TV show. I don't know if this was on purpose but it was similar to those shows (I've only seen clips) of a detective speaking to a "damsel-in-distress".
Season 3 seems like it's going back to what Season 1 was about in terms of story and flow. I'm only 1.5 episodes in but I'm already enjoying it far more than Season 2.
If you really want to watch everything about True Detective it might be better to start with Season 2 then go to Season 1 --> Season 3 --> Season 4. Or maybe just ignore Season 2 all together. Since it's an anthology, skipping a season doesn't really matter.

I dunno why, but S2 of True Detective felt like it would have belonged better in The Wire, like that season with the dock workers.

Season 3 felt like a remake of Season 1.
Night Country felt like a waste.

Yes. Season 3 feels very similar to Season 1.
I thought Night Country was received well. How was it a waste? (spoiler free of course)

Justified is a solid series I've been slowly watching. Just finished Season 5. Goggins steals every scene he is in, but there are so many characters and stories going on that every episode feels eventful.

For me, The Bear still checks those boxes, but it seems to be winding down. White Lotus is also an example of this, but it isn't for everyone the way some other shows are and skews a little more niche audience.

I would put the end of this Golden Age at around the end of Succession. There are some pundits who put this Golden Age from 2000 to 2023 (2000 being sopranos, and the start of appointment viewing TV series).
There are still great shows: Severance, Bear (although fans and critics were lukewarm on S3 and 4), etc. but there is a lot of very meh scripted content these days and streaming platforms are pushing out more "second screen" programming to watch while you scroll through tik tok.
