There were a few “We want 10” chants throughout the night, but after Smith was pulled there was definitely a “We want Smith” chant.

I heard the"We want Smith" and "We want 10" chants from my seat. I bumped into a few people at the game like Spector (who as beaming during the 2nd intermission), Lanny, Patterson, and Troy Brouwer. I assume he's scouting the series for the Blues.

Cursed things I dislike for karma reasons when being at the game:
- Doing the wave at any point really, but early into a game is just a no no
- Fans chanting "ref you suck" like that's going to help the bias any better
- Fans chanting "we want 10" again just bad karma
- Fans chanting "oilers suck" after giving up a 6-1 lead to 6-5 just seems odd
- The Edmonton Oilers

Look this was a blow out disguised as a fairly close score. But the Flames owned almost every aspect of the Oilers. The Oilers lost every puck battle to the bigger Flames. They didn't get a lot of continuous pressure in the Flames zone.
This game was close because of some unbelievable luck by the Oilers and really bad goaltending by Markstrom.
Now I don't have the stats but I think its rare that Markstrom plays two bad games in a row. However Smith with his hot and cold tends to go on streaks so Woodcroft is going to be losing sleep on his goaltending.
This game should have been 9 or 10 to two except against bad goaltending on the Flames and some really good saves by Koskinen.

You can tell Keith Tkachuk is a grumpy old man. That must have been a lucky hat or something to not even throw it. Then again, he doesn't look he's in great shape so it probably would have fluttered into his feet.

They even showed Walt taking pictures and high fiving fans — just spectacular.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I knew it would be an adventure when Markstrom went full Henrik Karlsson on the 2nd Oil goal. Glad they got it together in the back half of the 3rd but yeah, let's not do it quite like that again.

Good news from a ridiculous game like that is that the Flames (and Markstrom) have another gear. We've seen it all season. They know they weren't very good last night, especially in that dreadful 2nd period, which was arguably one of their worst of the season in terms of D coverage and goaltending. I have no doubt that they'll be much better in game 2.
Oilers on the other hand...last night was their ceiling. That was it. I mean, they scored 6 goals with McDrai contributing to pretty much every one of them. Usually that would be more than enough for that garbage team to win a hockey game. And yet they still lost.

UVA hat, from his daughters school. Probably means something to him.
But hell, it's big Walt. He'll laugh and say something like"empty netter, doesn't count"

Lost in the score, and not discussed by any of the"analysts" at all, was that the Flames legit dusted the Oilers all night long.
Shots: 48-28
Scoring Chances: 39-19
High Danger Chances: 19-7
It was shocking how easily the Oilers let the Flames take the puck into the centre of the ice to generate scoring chances.
Flames just need to take a breath and refocus on their system. I don't think the Oilers have the horses to keep up.

Absolutely amazing how much room was on the ice compared to the Dallas series--night and day.
Also, is anyone more due than Dube? I feel like he's been super solid even though he still doesn't have any points. That entire line is overdue.

They get mad if defenders impede his route to the net. They seriously think they should get out of the way. Of course they flip out if he gets hit. Such a joke of a fanbase

I actually started the chant in the nosebleeds, I can confirm that in at least my side of the bleeders it was "We want Smith!"

I agree it was a bad penalty but when Kane came in Lucic absolutely shed his gloves. Worth it, hammering McAvi and saying “I’m ready to ‘pay for that’… let’s go”, and having everyone chicken out… huge gamesmanship advantage early.

G3 - his fault, savable and needs to have better positioning and not be so small. That was weakest goal in my opinion and completely his fault.
G4- his fault, see above but flames did let Hymen come around the net and take clean shot from high danger zone.
G5 - savable but that's a high scoring area with Draisaitl. Need to be better defensively
G6 - not his fault, he made good first save and is giving up that rebound so coverage needs to be better
For sure at least 2 goals he normally stops but they need to stop playing river hockey when Draisaitl and McDavid are on the ice. That's all the oilers have and Markstrom needs to stop the Hymen goals. That is the most one dimensional team I've ever watched so lets shut them down better game 2.
|
You can say some of them weren't his fault, but the fact is that he was never in good position - for any of them. He was either too deep in his net, or he over-committed and took himself out of the play. I can't remember the last time I saw a goalie that poor, positionally.
1) he over-bought McDavid's move. But we can give that a pass
2) he totally over-committed with the flop and took himself out
3) horrific -way too deep
4) horrific - way to deep and a weak glove
5) poorly positioned, and a weak glove
6) over-committed and took himself out of the play, but we can give him a pass
Sutter has balls of iron for leaving him in, and it turned out to be a fantastic move, as Markstrom was more positionally sound in the 3rd.
But the bottom line is that goaltending is everything in the playoffs and the only way the Oilers can win the series is if Markstrom is the 2nd best goalie. and last night he was (well, 3rd best, but...)
