I take your point. But I think the Flames may want the cap space Stone is currently taking up next year and if it would be possible to get assets for him (I doubt it), why not make the trade? After all, the Flames could simply sign a FA defenceman like Cody Franson for league minimum to give them additional depth besides Dalton Prout.

Why not wait until the offseason you say? After all, that way the Flames would have the depth he provides for the playoffs and possibly Stone's value may even rise in the offseason since there will be less time on his contract.

I guess the only reason you would do it now is if a team like Pittsburgh truly was desperate for a RHD and it didn't want to just sign Cody Franson so that they were willing to give you draft picks. This seems crazy and I would never do it if I were Jim Rutherford, but its just an idea. The other reason to do it is if you want picks, I think those become more valuable to GMs as the draft gets closer so in and around July 1 may not be the best time.

Whats interesting about Pittsburgh and "being open for business" is how do they see their team? Rebuild/retool on the fly? Needing one or two pieces for a roster shake up?

But why would we add Brassard and Sprong?

So you give up on a guy when he is 5% into his contract?

You might think that way but thankfully the Flames don't.

I don’t think you trade Neal so early. Looks bad on the organization and future UFA’s. Some of you don’t get that.

Well there won't be any buying high with him either. It's now consecutive seasons of declining stats for him so I don't think you can call this a slump anymore. He's not been very good for two seasons in a row. This isn't a case like Dubnyk where a bad team is making him look worse than he is and a change of scenery is all he needs. Murray has issues and any team trading for him is taking a gamble that he can turn things around. Sometimes these guys just don't turn around as look at Cory Schneider.

By consecutive seasons do you mean last year and the 11 games he’s played this season? Even last year his stats were decent at worst.

They were below league average. Is below average now considered decent? More worrisome is the massive decline in his numbers compared to his first few seasons. His save percentage drop is a big red flag.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Should mention that the expectation is that Panarin's camp will be seeking $10 million to $11 million a year in his next deal whether that's in Columbus or on the open market...

In a perfect world we would have traded for Mike Hoffman and not signed Neal. Neal is here to stay though. He worries me a bit but I think his play has improved and hopefully he comes through when it matters.

If Rittich stays on a roll that gives time for Smith to find his game and can hopefully be serviceable in a backup roll.

If that can happen you play out this season and then go after a Vet UFA backup/1b in the offseason.

Some UFA options would be:
Howard
Lehner
Talbot (I know)
Koskinen
Kinkaid
Nilsson

And then obviously the two UFA starters
Bobrovsky
Varlamov

But those two are gonna get PAID. If Smith cant pull it together at least a bit by the Trade deadline you could go after 1 of the first set of those UFAs.

So you did mean just last season. After stellar rookie and sophomore seasons. 1 year where he was 15th in wins (playing the 2nd fewest games out of those 15). No, his save percentage was nothing to praise, but that happens (hell he was tied with Holtby in this category).

Probably what he is worth and will get, but i wouldn't want him for that kind of dough.

Kind of agree. Unless this story about him being able to center a line is true. Then he would be a superb fit pushing Backlund down to 3rd line situations.

I dunno. Hoffman is a good player but there's a lot of baggage there. Flames and Panthers had similar records last year and now Florida is struggling...

The biggest issue is that in order to get him we basically just put ourselves in the same situation the leafs are in. 4-5 top end Forwards, all getting paid and we would be having to fill the hole left by a retiring/declining Gio (at some point) and we would be cash strapped to do it.

All we would accomplish is switching situations with the leafs because they wouldn't move him to us without a young stud D man being included.

Just don't see the long term cap fit.

From a practical perspective, I don't think Hoffman could play in a hockey market until the entire Karlsson issue is resolved.

It’s premature to say this deal will get done, there’s still work to be done, but it sure sounds like talks are progressing. There seems to be earnest desire on both sides to reach agreement. My best guess would be term of 8 years and AAV somewhere north of $8M but south of $9M.
Yikes. Not a guy I’d want to build around at that price.

I am not advocating for Nylander. But acquiring him allows you to move Lindholm to C giving you much the outcome.

It would let you pair Gaudreau/Monahan, Tkachuk/Lindholm, Backlund/Frolik, and still have Nylander, Neal, and Bennett available to round up your top 9.

The biggest issue with the Flames (outside Smith's play) at the moment is they are top heavy at forward. When the top line doesn't produce we don't have enough secondary scoring. Which we saw during the California trip.

We just can't afford Nylander.

Good luck with that. Panarin is a great offensive winger but great offensive wingers don't make 10M+ a year.
