Beer Thread V2?3?4?

Hey guys I am heading through Calgary in a week and want to grab some cheap Alberta beer for my upcoming fishing trip.

I will be passing through on Stoney Trail heading out to Canmore.. basically from Highway 2 to Highway 1 (So Stoney NW). Any recommendations for liquor depots on this route?

Looking for something hoppy, IPA or a good pale ale I can buy in bulk... also picking up crappy beer for a friend.

I picked out a Costco and a Superstore along the way I will drive right past, but not sure what their selection is like as we they do not sell booze in Sask. Do they have a good craft beer selection?

Don't know the north end of Calgary that well but if you wait till you're in Canmore the Sobeys there has a good beer selection, all tucked away in a large chilled room. Whole wall of craft beer.

Yes I frequent that store at least once per visit to stock up. Great, great selection. I guess I was just hoping for some kind of crazy Costco or Superstore deal would jump out at me and was willing to stop at either and check if the selection was good.

Costco has very good prices, but limited selection on beer. You're looking at things like Heineken, Coors Light, Strongbow, Sleeman's I think, Rickard's taster packs, that type of stuff. You won't really find any craft beer there, at least not at the Costco I go to.

Superstore has a pretty decent craft beer selection and their are two of them along that route that I can think of. Also, Co-op liquor store in Creekside, which is along that same route, has a really good selection. A little pricier than Superstore but great selection and will only be a couple minutes out of your way. I live very close and go there regularly to try new stuff.

As we're in the midst of Oktoberfest right now, can anybody recommend some good German beers? They don't necessarily have to be official Oktoberfest Munich-based beers.

Mt. Begbie is a brewery I really like. They have a great cream ale that is good for all season, but I like it in the fall/winter. They also have a nice Dunkel, which is what you're looking for I think:

I've been drinking a lot of Parallel 49 lately. They've got a great range of beers.

The best part is they are located about 10 blocks from my place. They have a brew pub set up there where you can enjoy some very cheap beer on site or fill up a growler. A big fan of them being good, cheap, and local

The majority of grapefruity beers are IPA's hopped with Cascade Hops from the Pacific Northwest rather than adding citrus. Red Racer IPA for example.

It's no secret to most people who know me. I love beer. I have one beer almost every evening when I am winding down. When I go out to eat, I will order a beer. I realize this "habit" adds up, but it's really the only habit I have that costs me money. I'm sure I am not the only one who loves a nice cold beer. I've probably tried almost every beer at the liquor store. My favorite beers in no particular order are:

Mill Street Organic
Grolsch
Steamwhistle
Hoegaarden
Big Rock Saaz Republic Ale
Big Rock Scottish Style Heavy Ale
Ricard's White
Shock Top

I am sure there are more, I really dislike Bud, Canadian, Kokanee and those types of beers that taste like water. I hate paying $15 for a 6 pack of beer, what a serious rip off when compared to the prices in the US. Oh well.

Any suggestions for a good cheap beer under $2/serving?

I'm a sucker for Stiegl and Stiegl Radner (pretty good breakfast beer haha). I haven't been able to find the Stiegl wheat beer so far.

Unibrue Ephemere cherry is very tasty and even better on tap, you can find it at National.

Everyday beer for me are Rickard's Red, Traditional Ale and Stiegl of course

I would say Hat Trick Hop IPA is my current favourite beer out there.
It's brewed by our old friend Lanny McDonald's brewery Tamarack Brewing Company in Montana.

Honestly yes there are better beers and IPAs out there but I am a sucker for marketing so the name and it being Lanny's brewery sells me.

Ugh damn you Saskatchewan... I finally found a canned beer I like to drink and they take it away from me!



They carried it over the summer and it was awesome as bottles are a no no on any boat, I was always struggling to find a good hoppy beer in a can. Now it is gone I bought out my local LB this morning, got 48 but that won't last me long.

There is a serious contention on how to pour a beer.

For example, a good IPA will have outrageous head on it if you pour it less than delicately. We are conditioned to believe this is bad form. Ask the head brewer of Sierra Nevada, kings of IPA, about how to pour, and he will recommend an 'aggressive pour.' By aggressive, keep the glass flat, tip beer, let it slosh around and wait for things to even back out.

I still don't do it because generally when I am pouring a beer, I want it now, but, the theory is sound. Bigger head, more CO2 stays in the beer.
